| Rule 1: if you go, go. No hesitation.
Rule 2: clear calling. Know whose call it is. On the call of 'Yes' trust the call. Again, no hesitation. Of course, the calling needs to be sensible in order to foster trust.
Rule 3: if it's close, dive. You can make up 2-3 yards with a committed and well-timed dive. You should never be run out by a yard and remain on your feet.
Most of it is confidence and positive attitude. If both players go for a single, as long as the ball isn't hit firmly to a fielder you will make it. Fielders at club level often fumble or miss the stumps under pressure. Our opening partnership at school were superb at taking quick singles. They once took on a seemingly crazy run to square leg, but would have been in even if he hadn't fumbled it. Then, as the fielder briefly looked skywards in dismay, they took a second run! Think positive! Be positive! Create pressure.
