The underlying strength of Aussie cricket starts with the set up on a Saturday with grade cricket. The quality of cricket played on a Saturday in grade 1 cricket in Oz is light years ahead of the equivalent in UK. I played 'grade 1' criket in Surrey Championship. The gap betwen top and bottom widened each year and Surrey County staff were guided towards the stronger cliubs. Overseas players were also paid for by wealthier clubs until restrictions were in place. however, grade2 players from Sydney would walk into grade 1 clubs in Surrey and command a place.

Until the strength of competition is raised in club cricket the progression to first class will be stilted.
