Firstly Johnson is a young bowler, and secondly he has a better record in ODI cricket than say a bowler like Clark. Left arm Fast bowlers that can swing the ball are hard to find. Out of the Australian contracted bowlers his record at this time in his career he is up there with some very good bowlers, also teams are scoring more runs nowadays.

Johnson - 18 matches, 26 wickets at 27.88, bb 4/11, Econ 5.33, SR 31.38, 2x4wi

Now look at these bowlers at the same stage of there careers.
McGrath - 18 matches, 22 wickets at 27.54, bb 4/24, Econ ?, Sr ?, 2x4wi
Bracken - 18 matches, 29 wickets at 20.27, bb 4/29, Econ ?, Sr ?, 1x4wi
Gillespie - 18 matches, 23 wickets at 31.56, bb 4/26, Econ ?, Sr ?, 1x4wi
Lee - 18 matches, 29 wickets at 22.82, bb 5/27, Econ ?, Sr ?, 1x5wi
Kasprowicz - 18 matches, 24 wickets at 32.25, bb 3/50, Econ ?, Sr ?
