| My WAT England A team: Joe Denly (RHB - Kent) 21y Paul Horton (RHB - Lancashire) 25y Owais Shah (RHB - Middlesex) 28y Michael Carberry (LHB - Hampshire) 27y David Sales (RHB - Northamptonshire) 29y Ravi Bopara (RHB - Essex) 22y Tim Ambrose+ (RHB - Warwickshire) 24y Tim Bresnan (RHB/RA-MF - Yorkshire) 22y Graeme Swann (RHB/RA-OB - Nottinghamshire) 28y Stuart Broad (LHB/RA-FM - Leicestershire) 21y Chris Tremlett (RHB/RA-MF) - Hampshire) 26y
After researching the major candidates I've ommitted many players from last years WAT team who had average or poor seasons by their standards. From last year's team I ommitted Nick Compton, Scott Newman, Michael Yardy, Ed Joyce, James Foster and Adil Rashid. Sajid Mahmood is not qualified due to having played more than 5 Test matches. Adil Rashid was rushed into the side last year as the specialist spinner based on half a season. I disagreed with his selection then as being too hasty and I think I was proven correct this year. I feel Rashid is developing into a batting all-rounder and could take the #6 batting spot in the future. However, Ravi Bopara seems to have that spot for some time unless he is disqualified for playing too many Test matches.
Once again, due to a lack of experienced openers, I had to choose from a pool of young players. Denly and Horton impressed this year but could easily turn in poor seasons next year. A consistent opener is hard to find. On the otherhand, there is no shortage of good middle-order bats to choose from. Owais Shah has bounced back from an indifferent year last year and I think is ready for Test cricket. Michael Carberry has steadily improved and deserves his selection this year. David Sales is Mr Consistency and will be too old for consideration next year. His middle-order position will be keenly contested next year by Hildreth, Edwards and Patel.
There is no shortage of good batsmen-keepers either. Foster is still a force but I think it's time to look for a younger man. Tim Ambrose, at 24y, should be a strong contender to replace Prior if and when that player's England career comes to an end. Tim Bresnan is my choice for third seamer. He's a proven bowling all-rounder who willl strengthen the lower-order.
England is still undersupplied with quality specialist spinners. Rashid is primarily a batting all-rounder. That leaves Batty and Swann to choose from. Both had good seasons but Swann gets my vote as the younger of the two players. He will also be qualified next year unless he plays a few Test matches.
The two main strike bowlers are Stuart Broad and Chris Tremlett from last years team. Both have impressed at International level and I'm sure both will figure in a few Test matches in the near future.
Kabir Ali and Adil Rashid can consider themselves unlucky not to make my side this year.
