Well I could (like I do most things) blame it all on Greatbatch but in all honesty Mark had reached the point in his career where he really did need a move and change in surroundings to get himself back to his pre-injury level.
In terms of his fairly indifferent one day record with us his main problem was IMO because of our at times mindless obession with Carter as pinch hitter he was never really sure of his role in the side. He either found himself 10-2 having to rebuild the innings or 50-1 after 6 overs and felt he had to continue the flying start and attempt too much too early in his innings. Though I think the official reasoning from Greatbatch for leaving him out was his lack of mobility in the field (something that was amply demonstrated by the screamer he took on his return to Edgebaston in the pro40
