| The only fair way that I can see of dealing with this - i.e. a way that can be equally applied to all entrants - is to score only at the end of the series. Where a manager has picked a player who does not play all through the series, that player can be substituted, with substitutes being taken in the order that they are presented by the manager - so, if a bowler doesn't play all series, he should be substituted by reserve bowler 1, or reserve bowler 2, etc., in order (proceeding down the reserve list until you find the first one who actually played). I'm not sure how much work this would make for the creator though: it seems very complicated to me.
As far as Ern's players not scoring are concerned, well, as long as they play at some point, failure to score is just tough luck, isn't it? I'm not sure you should substitute even a non-player after only one match: the sub may only show up for that one match and the replaced player could then appear in every other match in the series.
Trouble with my suggestion is that it actually becomes impossible to score the series until it finishes since first match scores could be changed after the series ends if a non-scorer in that match eventually turns out to be a no-show and is then substituted retrospectively. I haven't got an answer to that one. I think Richard's solution using his Excel sheet was simply to allow no subs! We've certainly moved on and complicated things here!
