If they do, they will seriously hamper Australia. Ambrose and Walsh may have been great players, but they hung around way to long IMO, hampering the opportunities for the next generation. the result was the Next generation never got close to achiveimg what they did. |
I'd agree that McGrath, Gillespie and Warne are all likely to go in the next few years... possibly forced out by injury (or the increasing effort of staying injury free).. or perhaps because something like the 2007 Ashes against a rejuvinated England (we can live in hope) provides a sensible climax to a career... but also because there will almost certainly be huge competition for their places before long - whether it's a new, more mature Lee, a massively improved Tait or Bracken or someone most of us haven't really heard of yet... there's sure to be someone demanding inclusion.
I don't agree on Ambrose and Walsh though: Ambrose was at / near his very best in the two years prior to his retirement (and a virtual certainty for a world XI).. and Walsh was
without question at his peak in his final few years (though that's not such a great claim: he really didn't seem to be anything THAT special until his early 30s).
If any WI held others back it was Bishop.. but I don't think even that was true: there wasn't anyone too hold back. The implosion of WI cricket was there for all to see... and the crisis that followed the retirements was pretty much inevitable.
