First of all, we've disscused the whole 'little bit on the wane' thing and it's .... . There is no doubt both statisticly and practicly that our bowlers are as good as they have ever been. At least for the momment and certinly for the Ashes.
But the 'one or two very decent players' part is just stupid. We've got 11 'very decent players' all of whom would walk into any other side.

Gillespie is no 'back up bowler' and nor is kaspa or Brett Lee or Warne.

I find this whole obsession about bowling short and fast at the Aussie batting line up, funny. The idea of keeping Aussie batsmen 'on the back foot' is simply insane. Adam Gillchrist is one of the most powerfull and efficent cutters in world cricket, infact that is his favorite area of the ground. Justin Langer is the same and in fact his major weakness is at the pads- He'll eat you for dinner if you bowl short. Ricky Ponting is widely regarded as the best hooker and puller of the ball in the world e.c.t How you can say that guys who are raised on fast bouncy pitches are not going to be able to cope with fast bowling escapes me.
If you think that because flintoff can bowl around 147 km/ph, that he is going to worry the aussies on English pitches...

Beny, don't worry too much about old F S Trueman. I'm sure he was a great cricketer - unfortunately he'd retired before I took an interest - and he was pretty entertaining as a commentator for the BBC for years. BUT he was very much one of the guys who thought (and said) "It never would 'ave 'appened in mah day, lad, when men were men and Sissy were a girl's name". Deep down, Fred probably thinks that Australia would struggle against Yorkshire, but I see he's got diplomatic in his old age: in one of your quotations he says that England "might 'ave a smatterin' of a chance". Even if England win The Ashes five-nil, he'll still say that "it was bloody close and we were lucky it weren't all over by lunchtime on day two at Lord's".

Ah'll sithee!
