Yeah m8. It was the minimum with the wind-chill factor. The day was worse than hell.

Isn't it inetresting how we all complain about the weather in each of our different parts of the world? Wouldn't it be absolute utopia if I could exchange a few degress of heat with a few inches of rain?...no one would complain then...;-)

You don't know you're born down there, Beny! I lived in Moscow a few years ago. The coldest winter day I ever experienced was -38C (and I'll tell you something: you can feel it getting colder all the way down to -25C, passing through a strange point at -17C when the hair on the inside of your nostrils freezes, which is an unpleasant sensation because you think you have a continuous unpleasantness dangling from the end of your schnozz, but after -25C you can't feel the difference - it's just bloody cold!). On the other end of the scale, four months later in mid-summer it was +38C for about four weeks in a row. Daft place to build a city if you ask me.

The bizarre thing was that in the winter I had to have the bedroom windows open with 30cm of snow on the outside windowsill. The heating was centrally provided by the city, which piped hot water from area heating stations (you could see lines of cats on the streets where the hot water pipes were under the pavement), and this was one thing which the Russians really knew how to do efficiently. Opening the windows in the apartment was the only way to get the temperature down to anything comfortable. It could be -25 outside and +18 inside, even with the windows open. Really odd - and must have been costing someone a fortune.

So that's what really brought down communism? Central heating?

You're not alone Nikhil. I'm not a big Abramovich fan either, he's only got "Chelski" fans!!!
