Ohhhh Now I Understand. It's far more than Misfounded Optimism. It's the same sor of opptimism that tells the English that they can win Euro 2004. It all goes back to the Rugby Really.
Actualy just for you Ernast... How old was the English Rugby Team?

NZ Beth:

I would agree with you that 1997 was some time ago, I was merely trying to illustrate that it has happened in the past so it can happen again, even if it is unlikely. As I stated in an earlier post, a close series would be a start, and I certainly wouldn't underestimate the opposition I just don't think they'll have it all their own way next summer like they have in the past.

Beny:

Optimism, misfounded or otherwise, is something English cricket isn't particularly familiar with over the last 20 years or so.

In contrast to the football fans optimism, based on a feeling that, being English, we seem to have a right to win these tournaments as we invented the game and must therefore know how to play it better than any other nation, our cricketing optimism comes from the fact that the team is currently in the middle of the best run of results its had since the days of Hammond and Sutcliffe.

The resultant feel-good factor allows us to hope that maybe we can turn this form into something more against Oz. And I'm sure that after so many years of thrashing us time and again, many Aussies might welcome a more competitive series.

Finally, IMHO your prospective 2005 under-34s are quite a close match for the current Eng side, which should be the same for next year injuries permitting.

Cool

"Finally, IMHO your prospective 2005 under-34s are quite a close match for the current Eng side, which should be the same for next year injuries permitting."

Except they have a far better batting line up. The Bowling is'nt all that great though. Either way it's unlikely that The Likes of McGrath (who's been in good form recently), Warne, Perhaps Leheman, Hayden and Gilly wont all be there. This is for those like ernast who think that England could thrash us with their one man bowling line up and three man batting because our players will be too old.

Genearly we welcome compition, especialy after the last few years, however not against England. After all, you did send our founders down here chained, under fed and in really bad conditions, for a 7 month journy. (we've got long memmories)

And overall, Beny, you blokes have made a pretty good go of the place. I wonder sometimes if the greater punishment wasn't being left behind (just back from one of my twice yearly trips to London, which is one of the world's greatest toilets in my view).

As far as the cricket is concerned next summer, we'll give you some competition I think (and hope). We're going to have to be very lucky to take The Ashes back next year though. I'm looking forward to seeing it happen in your summer 2006/7, when I will certainly be there to see it.

You really are a masochist, aren't you: I live an hour and a half from the place and have been able to avoid it far more effectively than that.

Not sure I've been in this millenium to be honest.

Ugh.. what a thought: Hayden, Gilchrist, Kallis and Flintoff all bashing balls out of shape - not my cup of tea. Wouldn't have minded Steve Waugh (or his brother) joining our ranks a few years back though... and Ponting certainly appeals.. and I think I'd take Warne, McGrath AND Gillespie right now :-)
