Its was a very unfair original post I put up.

Ponting is very close to being hailed the best batsmen in the world at all forms of international cricket currently and possibly the last 50 years.
(tests 50 over odi's & 20/20)
Overall he is definitely the best on the planet right now.
No one has his range of shear power ( he hits huge 6's) nor his timing and planning of an innings.
He is on track to surpass all others in test runs at the end of his carreer.
And unlike Gilchrist at number 7 he is averaging 55 + from number 3 which is extraordinary.
If I had to compare him to anyone it would be "Viv Richards".
I think he is at least Viv's equal and probably Tendulkar's as well, if not their better.

Flintoff would make a poor captain, I believe Ern...He has done a good enough job getting to where he is, don't make him captain and spoil the work.....Ash Giles perhaps????

Freddie has a great desire to lead England, he's gone public with that desire, I think he'd love to be captain of England. But I'm not for chance just for the sake of it, what's Vaughan done wrong?

Nahh he hasn't done anything wrong apart from bad form, but I reckon sometimes it is better to try a lesser like captaining the country...Fleming was a lesser like, and Boje is vice captain of South Africa...

Either Vaughan or Tresco for now..

In agreeance with Milo, Tendulkar is the benchmark for post World War II batsman, then followed by Viv I'd Say

Having watched a lot of cricket over the years, I feel that Ponting would clearly struggle to break into a middle order of Chappell, Border and Steve Waugh for Australia.

My sentiments as well Paoli, my memories of Botham as captain are only to vivid.

If we made a greatest Australian XI, the only 2 certainties would be Bradman and Warne....Ponting will probably make it and he is in great form...I for one believe Gilchrist is the best player in world cricket....A bit like Andy Flower but in all honesty he is better....14 test centuries already, more on their way...

Could be too. My comment was a little cheeky and that was all it was meant to be. I actually stated my real opinions a couple of posts later before it became clear it had upset a couple of people. Sorry to those who may of got upset. Was'nt intended to do that and to be honest, i thought it was in a neutral thread
