Merv Hughes new Aus selector

I cannot believe it. Big Merv???? Surely they could have done better than that. Maybe they needed a token bowler in the panel.

Hohn's and the boys better watch out for his ear-munching and bear hugs. Border must have heard Merv was the next in line and got out while th going was good
What do you think?

Selection will be based on beer swigging, pie munching, 'tache growing, manly sweariness then!

I compleatly back the decision. I prefer him over Ray Bright anyway.

I'm not an Aussie, so I don't know the merits of Merv or the other candidates as selectors. However, he's a bit of a legend over here in England. the fans used to join in with his warm-up routine, and he was never shy in his approach on the field. It'll be interesting to see who wins the battle of the walruses - him or Boon. Great players, great taches and great drinkers. Are they related by any chance?!

Come now Paoli. Your not implying that selectors choose teams based on which state they play for are you?

I don't know who the candidates were but i would not term Merv as one of the great thinkers of the game. Ever seen him on "inside cricket" on fox sports?

I dont know about his 'thinking' credentials, but Bright annoys the hell out of me. The fact that Merv has had a lot to do with coaching both senior and junior talent adds to his resume though.

IN any case, i think the panel needed a fast bowler in their ranks and, dare i say it, a Victorian. Will keep a open mind on Merv - he may well have the goods but am still surprised he got the nod.

No, not entirely Seamer, but I'm saying that decisions can swing that way. In 2003, for tests against India and Zimbabwe, Nathan Bracken was called up to the team ahead of Inness who was having possibly the best 12 months of his career and was bowling better than Bracken. Hodge is another one who has received little attention until now.

I'm saying that Merv will bring another dimension. Really, I don't think James Hopes would've got called up if there weren't a few Queenslanders on the panel.

The truth is, Merv is a pretty good thinker, but I reckon Deano should've got the nod (though he was never in the running). Best of luck to Merv and hope he identifies future Australian talent.
