Hayden - Mike Hussey? McGrath (I know he played well in the 1st ashes test but this is likely in a year to 18 months 2-3 years would be a real push and suggest that the next generation is not up to scratch.) Warne (already retired from ODI's...) Warne & McGrath - How do you replace two of the best players ever to have graced the game...

| Not really a problem Australia have to worry about for some time. They will still be there for the Ashes defense in 2007 and who knows who will be putting there hand up by then. The Aussie domestic scene is very strong and someone will come along. Australia have a easy run for the next couple of years - tours to the sub-continent and England being recently completed. If the Aussies win this series well, we then have a smooth run for two years which will mean we will still be winning and keep the no1 ranking and have the oppurtunity to rebuild by injecting new players. Australia are in a very good situation now. England however have it all before them. They have India home and away, Pakistan away and Australia away. If they think Australia at home is tough, wait until they get to the subcontinent. After three overs, the nice shiny ball has become a tattered mess, poluted air in 40c heat, Harmison all homesick, Giles as the spinner. Tough times ahead for England.

Since 1990 Australia has been able to replace the following players and still be a dominate team; 1. Graham Marsh 2. Mark Taylor 3. David Boon 4. Alan Border 5. Dean Jones 6. Steve Waugh 7. Mark Waugh 8. Greg Matthews 9. Ian Healy 10. Merve Hughes 11. Bruce Read 12. Terry Alderman 13. Michael Slater 14. Craig McDermott 15. Matthew Elliott 16. Paul Reiffel 17. Darren Lehman I can not see why we can not continue replacing the players in Australia's side as we have one of the best Grass roots system in the world for developing players.

The Aussies will undoubtedly be able to put out a fine batting side for years to come but their bowling will definitely go backwards when McGrath and then Warne retire. And Gilchrist is also irreplacable. No matter how good the cricket infrastructure is they cannot expect to have 3 genuine alltime greats just appearing to take their places. Of course this will probably just see the team go to being very good rather than absolutely unstoppable.

Of the list of players the Aussies have replaced I would say that only the Waugh brothers are true greats in the way that McGrath and Warne are. Border was a great captain tho. Don't forget the Windies produced a long line of truely great bowlers, and then...
