There IS a power struggle going on behind the scenes IMO. The Aussie team does not look like a unit. They seem divided and perhaps this is why they are under-performing. Can't wait till one of the team retires and publishes a book so i can hear the full story.
I think the one behind the stumps (Gilly) should be captain, he has been punished heavilly for that defeat after the declaration on the last ashes tour when he was captaining in place of Steve Waugh (injured). Yet still wrapped up the series against India in India before Ponting came back from his injury.

Also if this power struggle is occuring, its quite possible two of our national selector's are lining up behind their two ex state team mates Booney behind Ponting and Merv behind Warney. Not to mention player's I notice it was the now defunked Dizzy Gillespie who jumped Warney in the batting order bad call Punter..

It is funny that Australia seem to discriminate against wicket-keepers as far as captaincy goes. The same thing happened to Rod Marsh. I agree that Gilcgrist would make a better captain than Ponting but personally, i reckon Warne would have been a brilliant captain and the best choice overall.

Maybe it was'nt such a bad call though. It certainly fired Warne up to get runs.

It would be nice to move on from this love triangle captaincy issue, unfortunately the only viable canditate other than Ponting who is under 30 yrs old "Michael Clarke" has the back of a 60 yr old.

Have you seen Warne's article in today's Times where he makes a veiled threat of legal action?

Quote:
Criticism is never nice, but you accept it because it comes with the territory. Stories that are completely unsubstantiated and untrue are another matter. There has been a lot of rubbish written about me on and off the field this season and a report at the weekend about a supposed bust-up with Ricky was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

Where it came from I don’t know. But if people from the outside are trying to unsettle me personally and the team all together through the newspapers, it won’t work. We’ll be looking into this article in particular and taking it from there.
A genuine threat, or just playing the press at their own game? Either way he seems rattled.

Tell you what, as much as I dont rate ponting as a captain, I really rate warne .the aussies missed a big big big trick not making warne captain. He sees alot, knows alot has total respect of the team (and lets face it, most other teams too!) and plays hard. Which is one bug bear I have against Vaughan, although he plays hard doesnt get into (or not that I've seen) players who make basic errors. I dont think there would have been that many fielding errors under nasser hussain (for all his faults), in fact ithink they have made more in a series than in Nas's reign !

Ponting is not a captain, we should have known this when Gilchrist lead us to victory over India in India. How thick is Trevor Hohns.. and why is that no- talent spinner a selector !!
