The Mighty Victorian Bushrangers

What A win ! A victory for the ages to start the cricket domestic season. Victoria defeats Western Australia for only th e2nd time in 20 years In Perth (I Think!).

The Vics won by 4 wickets but they had control of the match from early on Day 1 I would safely say. Our next match is up in Queensland against The Bulls. A draw with a 1st innings win would be the tip from me but if WE can sneak away with 6 pts, an overall win I can just see a great season ahead.

Winning 2 in a row away to start the season would really be massive.

Go The Vics !

Vics clinch rare win in Perth

21/10/2005

By Ken Piesse

Victoria clinched a rare outright win against the Western Warriors in Perth by four wickets just as rain engulfed the WACA Ground. Set 184 runs to win, the Vics recovered after losing several early wickets, finishing at 6-184, captain Cameron White making 48 not out and Jon Moss 25.

Resuming at 4-86, the Vics lost both not out batsmen, David Hussey (4) who was out second ball of the day to Brad Williams and Nick Jewell (41) who was controversially lbw to Brett Dorey.

But White (pictured left) and man-of-the-match Moss combined to blunt the Warriors, adding 67 for the seventh wicket, both playing sensibly on a fourth day wicket still good for batting. Both had their slices of luck, however, Mathew Inness dropping one caught and bowled chance which was crucial in the fortunes.

The two Victorians scored at three an over, Moss (left) hitting the winning runs from the bowling of ex-teammate Inness late in the first session, to the joy of all his teammates.

"It was a great win for us, an ideal start," said coach Greg Shipperd. "We had some very fine performers, but at some stage almost everyone chipped in which is important as we look to go forward this summer."

For the Warriors, improved seamer Dorey took three for 36.

Asked afterwards how he felt, White said: "We have been coming here for a long time and have won only two or three times in the last 15 years. It's a great feeling. Now we're looking forward to Sunday and hoping to be just as competitive."

Is that Jonathan Moss ex of Derbyshire? If so then Australian cricket isn't as strong as I was led to believe.

The very same Jon Moss. Also finished with match figures of 39-11-127-8 !!!

I get the feeling there's a lot of hype about the Aussie domestic game.

OHH right because if they dont do well in English conditions far from home then they obviously can't be any good!
A couple of points.

1. Didd'nt I hear people saying that Clarke was overated because he didd'nt do well in England? And we all remember the calls on Tait.

2. I personaly belive the Vic selectors should be shot and I dont personaly like Moss in the team but he comes in handy every now and again, mind you no other team in Aus would pick him in the 11 (he only came to Vic because he could'nt get a game for NSW).

3. There is much evidence to the contary. For instance the likes of Ian Harvey and Phil Jaques have gone to England and dominated and then not been able to reproduce back in Aus (Jaques is starting to now).

Plenty of Aussie batsmen have come to England and excelled.. but two factors make me very sceptical about claims for either the depth of batting talent in Austraia or (equally exagerated) the depth of batting talent in the English home counties (esp. Kent, Middlesex and Surrey).

{i} Pitches are truer and more durable than most motorway surfaces.

{ii} Conditions rarely suit swing bowling.

Of course.. {i} just compounds {ii}: if the pitch is completely trustworthy then even when the ball WILL swing the bowlers are afraid to try because that makes it more likely that they will stray onto the pads or wide.. and with no appreciable seam movement to worry about the batsmen will happily play with an open face or across the line and find risk-free runs square of the wicket.*

Proper cricket wickets should make scoring square of the wicket a high risk, "pinch hitter" tactic. So often in Australia it's more the norm. Get those same players on proper pitches and they'll suffer: they just ain't used to getting forward and playing straight and leaving anything that's not on the stumps.

I'd love to see the top Australian Domestic sides come over to Headingley, Trent Bridge, the Rose Bowl and the Riverside and play a knockout tournament (perhaps including top county sides) BUT WITH THE WICKETS UNCOVERED - I suspect some would thrive... but most would be cruelly exposed.

*That's why Simon Jones has been so reluctant to take the new ball in the past: he used to bowl his first over with the seam horizontal because he was afraid the horizontal movement would give the batsmen too much width. Criminal!!!!

Aaron, Tait was abnormally atrocious in England. He did alright in the Ashes series but I'd like to see him have another go at county cricket, with a club other than Durham.

Rach,

What you say is assuming that a batsmen is only good if they can play well on an English green top, which is akin to saying that a batsmen is only quality if they can play well in the Sub-continent. Aussie pitches do tend to suit the batsmen more than the bowler but that does'nt mean they are concreate roadways. If a bowler is good enough then there is plenty to work with on an Aussie pitch as was shown by the batting collapes in the Super test. Lets not forget that Australia has produced some of the best fast bowlers and swing bowlers ever. And to further illistrate this point look no further than Mike Hussy who dominates in England but does nowhere near as well in Australia.

Well take what you will from the results of this round of the ING cup (ODD).

Most of the Aussie squad were back with their state teams and most of them struggled. Certianly I saw some of the SA batsmen taking to Lee and McGrath with vengance.
