| Michael Clarke actually won the award for "the most outstanding Australian cricketer of the past season as voted by his peers, the media and umpires" - the Allan Border Medal, the ultimate accolade for Australian Cricketers (at least at a national level). The "up and coming" award, the Bradman Young Player of the Year was won by Mark Cosgrove - not long before he was dropped from the State team as his form slumped. Past winners of the Bradman award were:
2000: Brett Lee
2001: Nathan Bracken
2002: Shane Watson
2003: Nathan Hauritz
2004: Shaun Tait
It would appear to be an omen of bad luck, rather than indicative of a rise to the top. Lee stuttered for a few years before being dropped after winning it; Bracken hasn't set the world on fire; Watson and Tait are nursing long-term injuries and Hauritz looks like being a one-test wonder. |
