Also if he was batting with Symonds in tests, that could be two wickets given quickly if they both played rash shots this could leave the Aussies losing two wickets for very few runs.

Great point. He doesn't deserve a spot in the side as a Batsmen only. Batter/keeper? For sure!

Big Merv

Would have your veiw on Gilchrist's batting been different 18 months ago before his form slump.
I thought at around the time of his double ton in South Africa that he could have easily thrown away the keeping gloves and been selected on batting alone.
Now he is getting older I am thinking instead of keeping and training to keep that maybe he should concentrate only on batting and training to bat.
Regardless of how well he keeps, that position's other pre-requisite is that the incumbent can score runs as well.
If he is not scoring runs he may as well be dropped then, because we cannot afford to be including a non-scoring keeper in tests or one dayers.
If you cant keep and be a run scorer then their is no place for you keeping alone in modern day international cricket.
Gilly's biggest problem at the momement is he is not scoring much, he can keep brilliantly but his place will remain in doubt while he stuggles to get runs.

To be honest I think that's what the selectors are doing now, allowing him to open in the ODI's for a quick fire start.

Around the time of Gilchrist's double ton in South Africa, he could've thrown away the gloves but in my opinion, was establishing himself as the best cricketer in the world at that time. In fact, he may already have been the best cricketer in the world.

I've never rated Gilchrist's keeping as more than adequate...but why should we have gotten rid of a batsman at that stage to put Gilly as an out and out batsman? Adequate with the gloves, brilliant with the bat. Now, he's adequate with the gloves and less than that.

Part of me thinks that Gilly's just a bloke who knows how to bat very well...and if it doesn't work out for him, he can't fix it. But the other part of me says he's a class player and will get back to his best form.
