| I think rested is the proper term. Gilly has been the one to cop the biggest age-workload this year. We've rested the fast bowlers but Gilly has been going full out for both test and ODI fixtures.

| At 34 I'm sure Gilly would have some concern's about having a younger competitor for his position coming into the team in his spot for even only 2 games. Gilly surely has'nt got knocked up during his extremely breif time out the middle batting over the past 12 months. |

| Gilly was supposed to be rested for the ODIs against the kiwi's but that would of meant going there without gilly or mcgrath. A rest could do him the world of good |

| I think, with the world cup and Ashes/future test series in mind, that Gilly should retire from ODIs. It is plain to see that he cannot fully commit to both for the next two years, as it is already taking its toll on his performances and tiring him out. I think it would be better for Australia to have him solely as a test player, as they have a good number of ODI players ready to step in, Haddin for one. It would mean someone else opening probably, but I'm sure people wouldn't mind an opening partnership of, say, Hayden and Katich? This lineup wouldn't be too shabby, I think: Hayden Katich Ponting* Martyn Clarke Symonds Hussey Haddin+ Lee Bracken McGrath Hogg (Supersub) |

| What about opening with Martyn, he did it in the Twenty20 and was successful. Hayden was dropped I think with possibly the same intentions in mind, to prolong his test career as well as his reasonably poor form.

| I've just seen that Jacques is coming in to open in the next game as Katich has an injury (groin strain IIRC). So maybe he is a contender? Now is a good time to introduce him, as he has plenty of time to get into the groove. I think of Martyn as a number 4 generally - capable of rebuilding if things go wrong, and lashing out later. I don't see him as an opener in ODIs, which are still very different from Twenty20 games IMO (longer, more tactical), myself. |

| Fair enough, I think Jaques could have a good go with the bat, although he would only have one or two chances of giving the selectors a real incentive for him to be picked for ODI's.

| I think it would be better if Gilly hands over the keeping gloves to Haddin in all forms of the game, and has a prolonged trial in the team solely as a batsman. His starting credentials batting average exept for the past 18 months are a lot higher than a lot of other batsmen we have been trying in the team. And my personal feeling is that if he only concentrated and trained on his batting without the keeping, he is a talented enough batter to regain his form. His age may have caught up with him in regards to being a keeper and batsman, but I still think he has got 3-4 productive years left in him being a batter alone, and I think number 6 is the spot for him in both forms of the game. |
