Damien Martyn announces retirement

Damien Martyn has retired from International and Domestic cricket.

Damien Martyn, who was often unpredictable with the bat, has made a surprising call by announcing his retirement from international and domestic cricket. Martyn's place was under heavy scrutiny after the second Test, but he took control of his future by informing Cricket Australia of his decision today with immediate effect.
"I said to myself when I made this decision in the last 48 hours that I may lose friends in doing what I'm doing," he said in a statement. "But I also said to myself that if I stayed doing what I was doing I may equally lose respect for myself and the friendship of those around me who are entitled to expect from me more than 100%."

Martyn played 67 Tests in a 14-year career and scored 4406 runs at 46.37

I think that decision will gain a lot of respect from all quarters of Australian cricket. I think his one-day form is good enough to make the World Cup squad and I hope he reconsiders making himself available for that squad. I'll always remember him as a stylish batsman and very good fielder. He's been a very good servant for Australian cricket for many years and he has the average to show for it.

Yes he has retired from all forms of cricket - full story here , as far as one day cricket is concerned Mike - he may want to retire while on top, unlike players the stature of Botham and Lillee - I watched these two past their peaks, not a pretty sight.

"It's time to move aside..."

It takes a big man to say that. He was in the test desert for 6 years and fought his way back. That also takes a big man.

I hope the Aussies realise just what a fine player he was.

He obviously realised that if he couldn't score runs against the England attack then there was no hope.

Good player over the years,i wish him well in whatever he does in the future.

Its big of him to step aside, Another demonstration by an Aussie that the Team is more important that an individual, he should be saluted and remembered.

I heard he heard he was going to be dropped from the test side anyway... Roomers, roomers...

Important thing is, he retires on a high. That's important. No regrets.

I'll miss him from the side, has been my second favourite player for many years. I liked him just as
much for his attitude to the game than for his cricketing abilities. Kudos to him for making the decision,
heres hoping the others do the same.
