An Aussie playing for the West Indies?

It looks increasingly like Brendan Nash, an Australian born of Jamaican parents, will be called up to the squad for the series vs Australia.

Any of you guys from Australia see him play when he was playing state cricket?

Not a great deal, but I remember him as being fairly aggressive, and interestingly I think he may have been an opener- but I'm not certain.

Just out of curiousity- are you basing this on something you've heard or read, or just on his first-class season?

Brendan Nash stamped himself as a first-class player with 157 against South Australia and 92 in the Pura Cup final win over Tasmania in 2001-02, and he followed up the next season with 176 against New South Wales before a form slump disrupted his progress. He fought back to earn Bulls' contract status and was a regular performer without nailing a permanent place. A left-handed batsman, a stunning fielder (he was a Test substitute against West Indies at the Gabba in 2005) and a useful left-arm medium-pacer, he played five Pura Cup games in 2005-06 and picked up the third century of his career with 107 at the WACA. Small at 173cm, Nash follows in the large sporting trail of his father, who was a swimmer for Jamaica at Olympic and Commonwealth Games level from 1966 to 1970. After being used only three times in 2006-07, he was not offered a contract and decided to try his luck in Jamaica.

He's done well for Jamaica since he has arrived to play for them and his name is being seriously mentioned as a possibility at #6.

I've seen his stats and profile but just wanted to hear from Aussies who saw him play whilst in Australia.

I suspect his being selected for WI will occur sooner rather than later.

Very interesting news. But I hope he doesn't go in at 6, because that will force the Windies to continue to play 4 bowlers, which hasn't worked for them in the past and I doubt will work for them in the future. I'd much rather he went in at 5, with Chanderpaul at 4 and Bravo at 6, and that way they'll be able to play a full five-man bowling attack, which I consider to be a necessity for them.

Apparently Samuels is going to be banned, so I doubt if he'll be allowed to play in the upcoming series. That will defintely open up a spot at 4 or 5.

Its a shame the standard of West Indies cricket has dropped so low.

Brendan Nash never got anywhere near the radar of Australian selection.

And would never have got anywhere near a lineup like Haynes, Greenidge, Richards, Rowe, Gomes, Lloyd and Dujon either.

I think the selectors have to take a lot of the blame for that- in the training squad, picking non-performers Pollard and Roach ahead of Nash and Miller. Recently, continously overlooking Wavell Hinds in favour of Ganga or Devon Smith, two players with inferior records. Picking Fidel Edwards and Daren Powell contionously over Collins and Collymore. Only going in with three specialist quicks and no spinner (how old was Ramnarine when he was axed?). It's not a new problem, either. Yesterday I posed the question of what happened to Marlon Samuels' older brother, Robert? He only played 6 Tests, scoring a century and averaging 37. Not mind-boggling figures, but far better than the 24-averages of Adrian Griffith and Stuart Williams (both of whom played more than 10 Tests). And I also found out that in his brief 12-innings-long opening partnership with Sherwin Campbell, they averaged 42 together (greenidge and Haynes averaged 47). And he was ditched for no logical reason that I can see when he was only as old as Michael Clarke is now.

That's what's wrong with West Indian cricket- good performances aren't rewarded, and the better performers are shunted aside when they don't fit the selectors' idea of what a West Indian team should be like.
