Taking into account the whole country (according to the latest survey):
1- cricket
2- swimming
3- AFL/tennis

I answered this on the first page . AFL is huge in Melbourne and Perth, cricket is big everywhere, swimming and tennis has constant support around the country.

He's pretty well known in NSW. However he's regarded as over-rated in the other States. There's a general perception going around that he hasn't 'earned' his place, and has been given a bit of an easy ride. The same perception is surrounding Cameron White at the moment.

Only because he's a druggo . In NSW, no one really seems that impressed with him. I suspect he's big only in Melbourne and Perth.

Andrew Johns is NSW's favourite son, and is easily as big as Shane Warne. It's a pity he's retired . George Gregan, CAMPEZE!

The guy's barely known anywhere South of Canberra or West of Dubbo. Not to mention the totally non plussed looks you would get in any other mainland state or territory outside of Qld & NSW. I will admit he may have some fans in New Guinea though.

Cricket is a summer sport in Australia and AFL (Australian League Football) is a winter sport in Australia. It's like trying to compare Baseball (summer) with Gridiron (NFL winter) in America.

They are the 2 major sporting past-times of Australian's along with the ever aggressive soccer.
Rugby League and Rugby Union are both fighting for self preservation in Australia currently. Participation levels in both are low and they are fast becoming dinosaurs.

Michael Clarke is not a big name sports person in Australia, he is not yet a household name. It depends what biggest mean? Most played or most watched because the most played is appartently Netball then Soccar. I live in Melbourne where it is the capital of AFL and ten times as many people I know play Aussie Rules Football compared to cricket. Not many people really have the patience to play cricket in Melbourne. Im not sure if this is a national problem.

michael clarke is a big cricketer but i collect that he is not big in oz.

like that taking the avearge of the whole country what is the most watched sport and where does cricket rank?

in oz all sports players r atleast of a descent level but i wanna know that will it be fair to say that cricket is as big a thing as any in oz though it has to compete with many sports?

just amongst the passion-the sports watched-the following of the sports-where does cricket rank?

is the cricket team the most high profile(celebrity type) sporting team in oz?

Because it is the only major sport that Australians for the great percentage are unified behind.
The national players do enjoy a celebrity status.
Of the current Australian team Ricky Ponting and Adam Gilchrist enjoy a much higher public profile than the rest of the team like Michael Clarke
Of the recent retirees Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath enjoy a much higher public profile than other recent retirees like Damien Martyn and Justin Langer.

I think Basketball is more popular than baseball in America. Baseball is in a sort of decline over there.

It’s very difficult answering these questions because there are many contradictions. For example, cricket is one of the two most watched sports in Australia (along with the AFL), but the biggest sporting events in Australia are the AFL grand final, the Melbourne Cup (horse racing) and the Australian Open (tennis).

Cricket players as a whole are probably the most famous sporting people in Australia, but if you were to make a list of Australia’s 10 most famous sportsmen of the last decade, there would probably be only 2 cricketers to make the list (Cathy Freeman, Greg Norman, Kostya Tszyu, Peter Brock, Ian Thorpe, Pat Rafter, Susie Oneil, Kieren Perkins, Andrew Gaze, Harry Kewell). Not to mention that Don Bradman may not even be Australia’s most famous sporting personality, Phar Lap is probably just as famous, and he’s a racehorse.

Cricket is as big as anything ... during the summer. I don't know how cricket would compete with the various footy codes if they were being played at the same time.

The most high profile sports team in Australia is a toss up between cricketers and swimmers, and soccer is fast catching up. Libby Lenton, Liesel Jones, Grant Hackett, all enjoy celebrity status in Australia.

Johns is as well known around the Country as Chris Judd, according to the latest survey performed by Sweeny Sports, despite Johns having just retired .
