I don't live in Oz, but I hear Cricket still rules then it is Rugby League.

Also, I think this thead would do better in the Guest lounge.

Cricket has a broader appeal accross the country although crowd numbers have been shrinking recently (more due to lifestyle changes rather than dislike of the game I think.)
The football codes; Aussie Rules, League, Union and soccer all fight for the other spots although soccer has the highest participation rates at youth levels.

Aussie Rules finds its following predominetly in Melbourne, Perth, Darwin, Tasmania and Adalaide whilst NSW, Canberra and Queensland follow the rugby codes. Really though there are markets for every major code in all of those cities and soccer, under the guise of the new A-League is finding sucsess all over. (A Melbourne vs Sydney game in the home and away season can pull in 50,000+) and Melbourne averaged an attendence of 20,000 last year.

I will try to answer as best as i can without referring to a search engine.

Australian sport is divided into two seasons - summer and winter.

In summer, cricket is the biggest sport in terms of match attendance and television ratings and has a huge following nation wide. Soccer (a-league) is also gaining in popularity - mainly in the multicultural cities of Melbourne and Sydney with some big crowds turning up to watch there. But cricket is no1 in summer time

In winter, it is between Rugby league, Rugby Union and Aussie rules (AFL)
In terms of crowd attendances and TV ratings, AFL is the biggest. AFL also has a huge following nation wide.

Union would be second - every super12 game is a sellout, but the support base is mainly contained to two states - QLD, NSW and the tiny territory of ACT.

Rugby League would be third by a large margin with the bulk of it's support base contained to NSW and to a lesser extent QLD with only interstate and international matches selling out.

So overall, it would come down to Cricket and AFL.

Beny, i reckon AFL is bigger than league in brisbane these days. Probably because of all you Mexicans moving up here

According to the survey conducted by Sweeny Sports, Australians are most interested in:

1- cricket
2- swimming
3- AFL/tennis
5- soccer
6- league
7- union

It looks about right. Support for Union is falling, support for soccer is booming. Tennis, swimming, AFL and cricket are always strong.

http://www.sweeneyresearch.com.au/ne...ews_pdf_16.pdf

The survey also states that cricket and AFL have the highest attendance at the games. Swimming, Gym, bushwalking and fishing are the sports with the highest participation. AFL, cricket, tennis and soccer are the sports with the biggest TV ratings. Cricket and the AFL are the sports with the biggest radio ratings.

1)The AFL needs to reach Queensland and gain more support in NSW, while cricket is national, so cricket is still more popular than Aussie Rules. Cricket is the number 1 sport in Australia (in 2007).

2)The most followed Australian sports team is a difficult question. Toss a coin between cricket, swimming and soccer, I have no idea. Support for swimming is falling with the retirement of Thorpe, but the girls are doing well. Cricket is on a boom after the 2005 ASHES loss (reviving interest). Soccer is on a huge boom.
