Funny thing Greg.

I noticed during Sehwag's fantastic innings of 151 in the 2nd innings at Adelaide that after he got past 100 he slowed to a walk.

Getting a test hundred must be fairly draining, even in this day and age.

yeah milo...its probably unfair as u say to compare the cricketers of one generation with another....its like saying people like sachin, ponting, lara are better than don bradman as they have more centuries. i guess in 50 years time things may change as u said. but do u notice one thing that in the 50 years or so after bradman has retired that no player has even able to come close to his average of almost 100? i guess the batsman like viv richards, sachin, lara etc will be remembered for some aspect similar and ofcourse technique. do u remember how don bradman said sachin's technique was similar to his? i think its impossible to play cricket very long without technique. with hayden too i think its the consistency of a hundred every 3 matches that i admire more than the number 30!!!
i sorta agree that the amount of cricket played by the cricketers in the past and present is the same. people in the past played a lot more domestic cricket. but i've heard a lot of past players say that the rigors of international cricket is much worse than domestic cricket. also its said that One-dayers take a heavy toll on the body...isn't that the reason players like waugh and kumble retired from one days to prolong test career?? so in the past people played much less one dayers helping some people to play even till their 40's.
u may say that the technology of training and sports medicine is far advanced now and that makes my points about injuries spurious. but that increased technology should decrease the number of injuries to players all over the world, is that true??i think that the recovery times have decreased but the number of injuries have remained the same or even probably increased a bit. i really do think nothing can be taken away from modern day cricketers or the past players both are gr8 in their own right.

I am glad that you mentioned this because I do think those two batsmen are comparable despite Greenidge's fluency and Trescothik's ugly style. If Trescothick had not been battling his personal demons (which go back quite a long way, I understand), his batting record might have been better than it is. He never looked attractive while batting, but has been effective on more than one occasion. I think his early fade-out of international cricket is an important loss for England.

Curiously, Trescothick's approach to batting was not unlike that of Hayden (I am not talking about technique or style) ie an attempt to dominate the bowlers by his presence.

Gordon Greenidge and Matthew Hayden have been able to intimidate oppositions and bully them into bowling badly. Both those men have won many more games for there country than Trescothick.

Yeah, more centuries, but in twice as many matches(in case of Tendulkar & Lara, even more). No sane person will say that they were better than Bradman.99.94 is cricket's holy number.

In Test history?

Are you sure?

The likes of Bradman, Lara and a few others can do better than that.

Gavaskar passed 700 runs twice on two separate tours of the West Indies, if I remember correctly. Scores of batsmen have passed 500 more than once in a Test series.
