The Name a Random Former State Cricketer Thread

Just been doing this with a few mates the last few nights and have literally hit the floor with laughter at some of them.

Here's a thread to name and be nostalgic over past state cricketers. I'll get the ball rolling with former Queensland player Scott Prestwidge. I never remembered him as any more than a useless medium pacer and a lower order hitter, but seemed to have a half decent career.

Also feel free to add some who may have played the odd game for the test/ODI team.

Richard Chee Quee. Ex New South Wales opener, quite possibly the only person of Asian descent to have played cricket at a reasonable level in Australia - ever! Was a laugh mainly for his name and the fact he wore a wide brimmed hat most of the time.

As a Western Australian, I absolutely have to mention Big Jo Angel. No snarl at all about him, no "gamesmanship," but despite that, he was an extremely good fast bowler who could have been a Test regular in many other countries, and who was one of the great wicket-takers at Sheffield Shield level. In fact, he did play a handful of Tests and ODIs with limited success. But we Warriors fans loved Big Jo, the very gentlest of giants.

Haha Big Jo! Crocked for about the last five years of his career. Stuffed knees, stuffed back, couldn't field or bat, yet still managed to bowl his allotment of overs with a lot of success, even if his pace died down heaps!

Mark Ridgeway, the Tasmanian quick who was pretty successful for a number of years, despite debuting in his thirties. His chief weapon was the light shining off his head into the batsman's eyes.

I reckon his weight was his biggest weapon, just quietly.

Paul 'Blocker' Wilson. Played for both SA and WA. Another run of the mill state bowler who got a run in the ODI side (and may have played a test).

Shaun Young. Reasonable player in the very average Tasmanian side of the mid-late 90s, Young was playing for Gloucestershire when Paul Reiffell and Steve Waugh were unable to take their place in the 6th Ashes Test of 1997. Despite being nowhere near a test callup, the fact that Young was close by meant he was called up for a test.

Michael Clark (son of Wayne Clark), Injury prone left arm swing bowler from (I think) Western Australia. Our O/S player for 2003 he played the season opener against Notts knocked over their star duo Afzaal and KP in his opening spell (looked vaguely half decent) before limping off with a groin injury in the second innings effectively costing us the match. A month later leaves the club with a stress fracture of the back to be replaced by the utterly useless Corey Collymore.

Still compared to Damien Fleming who managed the monumental total of 4 overs before breaking down we regard Clark’s stint at Edgebaston as something of a triumph .

"Flem" was a pony-tailer

Two memorable bowlers I remember coming as young cricketers at state level both with humongous pony tails like they never had a haircut in their life prior to hitting the Pura Cup/Sheffield shield.

Damien Fleming.....Victoria
Jason Gillespie......South Australia

Gillespie had a controllable one going half way down his back, Flem's was feral going beyond his buttocks
