Miles, as the deliberate short-running here appears to be very blatant, it seems that the umpire was either unaware of the law, or too caught up in the excitement of the game to think clearly.

I couldn't possibly comment. But yes, the press do have double standards and weird motivations sometimes.

This i would have to agree is cheating it is putting the fielding team in a disadvnaged positon and making the captain change his field where he proboly shouldn't have to.

Of course.. in that case... the umpire shouldn't be awarding ANY runs.
All bang on the money. But it's not "most commonly" before they cross - it only if they haven't crossed.

You've lost me here completely, Rachael. If you run one short deliberately, the only way you can get any score from it is by deceiving the umpire into thinking you did it accidentally. Deceit, either by dropping 6 inches short or by some other means, is essential - and, apart from just not being a very nice way of behaving, it's almost certainly not within the Spirit of Cricket. As soon as the umpire thinks you did it deliberately, you are knackered as the Law says that all runs from that delivery are disregarded and the batsmen are returned to their original ends. You also get a warning for your whole team and for the remainder of the innings.
