I thought that what was interesting about this Test was that Trescothick was clearly not in form but that he still managed to play a vital role in the first England innings, hung around for a long time to support Strauss and generally had did very well for a guy who is only supposed to be able to score runs when he is in form, and who was up against the Saffers best bowler and the new ball. In fact, he did better than Thorpe did in the first innings.

Also, against NZ earlier this year, when Strauss scored 90, he looked out of touch but scraped together 90 runs and a big partnership with Thorpe that kept us in the game. So I think both Struass and Trewcothick can score runs when out of form.

Strauss is not as good as Clarke... Not even in the same class. Just look at who Clarke is keeping out of the Aussie team and you'll realise how good he is.

How can you call him a superstar? He is obviously just a good batsmen who is in form...

Well anyway, I'll leave it alone and time will prove me right.

Good point there. Also he is 28 or 29 at the moment, so how much cricket can he play?

I don't think age is an issue. He is 27, which is around the age when the likes of Hayden, Gilchrist, Langer et al became Test regulars - and no one disputes that they all have excellent Test records.

The Afore mentioned all made their debuts about the age of 20.

Cool

And the aforementioned were all inconsequential players till they reached their mid/late 20s....

And in the case of Gilchrist, the debut was not till he was 28!

Yes but It was still known that they were all fantastic players.

Gilly was being kept out by Ian Healy. Hayden had a few technical glitches and the rest just had too much talent for their own good and did'nt have the mental grit to keep playing at that level.

oh cliches cliches!

Langer, a fanstastic player? He was 28, had played 11 Tests in 8 years, had an average of 28...and a fantastic player? Obviously the Australians did not have very high standards then, if this guy was considered "fantastic".

Gilchrist did not make his debut, became an established player at a very old age.

Strauss is at a similar age. That is the point, to say that age is irrelevant, in Strauss' case, since he is not too old at all.

By his 29th birthday, Hayden had played the splendid total of 8 Tests, with the ultra-impressive average of 21!

Yes...really, truly spectacular!

These guys are not gods, they are decent cricketers in a good cricket side. That does not mean you have to be biased and put down every other cricketer from every other country.
