Honesty

Michael Vaughan: 'All I have ever asked for from the England team is honesty'

A brilliant interview give by the England Skipper to Angus Fraser - a must read for any England supporter!

Quote:
"So Michael, have you made any mistakes in the last 12 months?" I inquired. If he had ended the interview there I could not have complained but Michael Vaughan is not that sort of chap. The England cricket captain is too pleasant a man to be rude to a bitter and twisted old bowler who used to get him out before he started shaving. And after a year of unprecedented success he knew that this line of questioning would not last.

I never knew Vaughan enjoyed watching/playing/following golf. I do though now. Nice read this interview, thanks for the link R W S.

Thank you for the article RWS, very interesting. Vaughan appears to be a very sensible and well-balanced chap, England have been fortunate in unearthing a naturally good leader like him. When he was made captain, I am sure a lot of it was because he was the only world-class player in the team at that time (Thorpe was too old and controversial, and the rest, eg Flintoff and Harmison, had not arrived), so Vaughan was the default choice, not for his captaincy but for being the best player. Since then, others have eclipsed his achievements as a player, but he has shone through as a true leader. Well done!

Maranello

The natural order of things would have had Trescothick promoted to Skipper ahead of Vaughan and it was a contentious decision at the time! Here is the BBC page relating to the debate over who should replace Nasser - makes for interesting reading in retrospect!

I never had the impression at the time that Trescothick was a serious contender, from any of the various commentators on the press and in the media. Maybe he was a stronger contender for the ODI captaincy initially, as were many others to be honest, but once that had been awarded to Vaughan, there was little chance of Trecothick being selected as the Test captain in Summer 2003. He had more Tests than Vaughan but Vaughan was probably the first or second name on the teamsheet wherever and whenever the Test, whilst Tresco's overseas form has sometimes been too lacklustre, and he has had too many mediocre series.
