Should have played more...

he should have played a heck of a lot more for England than he did, and it almost seems that it took his tragic death to make people realise this.
Sadly Kirsty, only the good die young. Mozart, Monroe, Elvis, Diana, and Ben Hollioake.

There is no irony meant here...but anyone in the public eye who lives into middle and old age will become tainted by either their own excesses or the heartless, thoughtless, prying eyes and poison tongues of the ghastly media.

But I agree and how strange it is for a Surrey player, and I expect Martin Bicknell has a great deal of sympathy, England should have used him more.

True all-rounder

Mark Ealham is the only bowler I have ever seen take a caught and bowled on Brian Lara Cricket!
IT was during a Channel four Test series that Mark Nicholas mentioned Craig White and his offies, which as you say became seamers and then pretty darn quick seamers. Michael Slater just butted in and said that when he'd first met him at the Australian Academy he (White) was a 'keeper.

So I guess he returned to England and thought he couldn't displace Alec Stewart so perhaps he should work on his bowling.

That's the sort of determination and tenacity that you need to succeed at the top level...I have to say that I am a Craig White fan.

Ramprakash's offies afford a few c&bs on BLC...it's a bit hit and miss though as his target circle is so enormous.

Question

I'm pretty sure that David Capel was seen as a genuine alrounder to fill a post-Botham gap - I think he played a few tests in the West Indies. I'm also pretty sure that Paul Allott took wickets and scored runs in his first test and was immediatly touted as an All-rounder.

Who are the leading test nations' all-rounders? I'll bet just about everyone has one - interesting to see how a few stack up against Botham -

SA - Kallis & Pollock
AUS - Gilchrist & Symonds?
NZ - Styris & Oram
ENG - Flintoff
IND - Agarka
PAK -
ZIM - Taibu (ha ha ha)
SL - Chandanna?
BAN -
WI - Omari Banks?

Looks like SA are best off then - Kallis + class act?

You've forgotten Lance Klusener for SA, many and various others for AUS, Mahmoud for PAK and many others,
Gayle for WI.

David Capel, well remembered. I was deeply not in favour of him. And yes, Paul Allott scored a fifty in his first Test, v. Australia. Graham Dilley famously scored a fifty in partnership with Botham in the 1981 Headingley Test and as always when a bowler makes big runs, there is a suggestion that he could be a genuine all-rounder.

I forgot Alex Tudor and his 99 not out.

My thinking for the list of all-rounders was more for the present day, hence ruling out Klusener et al (unless anyone is touting him for an immediate return to the SA side!?).

We did have a glorious era back in the eighties I think where there was competition between all-rounder all the time - Botham, Kapil Dev, Hadlee, Imran Khan all chasing each other. I distinctly remember seeing World Allrounders competitions on the telly, like a sort of pairs competition. All of the above were in it, as were Clive Rice and rather more improbably Simon O'Donnell and I think Dermot Reeve (in his Hong Kong representative guise) - that was fantastic! wouldn't happen today. Also, all of the current all-rounders aren't really like for like - like the big 4 mentioned above were so it's difficult to compare them. always been a fan of Pollock though, and reckon he would bat 6 for England.

Sorry, I could've sworn that I read somewhere that Klusener was back in the reckoning. Obviously going senile. Apologies!
