David Capel, well remembered. I was deeply not in favour of him. And yes, Paul Allott scored a fifty in his first Test, v. Australia. Graham Dilley famously scored a fifty in partnership with Botham in the 1981 Headingley Test and as always when a bowler makes big runs, there is a suggestion that he could be a genuine all-rounder.
I forgot Alex Tudor and his 99 not out. |
My thinking for the list of all-rounders was more for the present day, hence ruling out Klusener et al (unless anyone is touting him for an immediate return to the SA side!?).
We did have a glorious era back in the eighties I think where there was competition between all-rounder all the time - Botham, Kapil Dev, Hadlee, Imran Khan all chasing each other. I distinctly remember seeing World Allrounders competitions on the telly, like a sort of pairs competition. All of the above were in it, as were Clive Rice and rather more improbably Simon O'Donnell and I
think Dermot Reeve (in his Hong Kong representative guise) - that was fantastic! wouldn't happen today. Also, all of the current all-rounders aren't really like for like - like the big 4 mentioned above were so it's difficult to compare them. always been a fan of Pollock though, and reckon he would bat 6 for England.
