Well, he may have been nominated, but not by enough people, clearly! The top five were Wilkinson, Johnson, Some horse rider, some motercyclist and Paula Radcliffe (? I think). Maybe be next year..perhaps an orchastrated campaign, after all Freddie has more personality than any of that lot!!!

It is a real pleasure to watch Flintoff play - I was at the Lords test last year when he hit his ton against SA. It was really magical, and to be honest I don't think most people were that fussed that we had lost after his innings! The crowd were really buzzing about his performance, not all glum from having our backsides kicked! I think it was good for the moral of the team, too, as they certainly improved in their performance (in the main) after that test match.

Here's hoping for more this year!!!

Kirsty,

Interesting post,You say when he had made his ton, most people were not that fussed that we had lost after his innings, well I can compare that crowd sentiment,to that of the West Indies, comentater after comentater, said the West Indies fans would be more thrilled at Brian Lara breaking the world record, than if they had won the test.
I think that was a turning point ,in a lot of ways, there is a confidence in the England team that has not been there for years, that is true Kirsty,it has been assumed for years that England would lose no matter who they played, the drawn series with South Africa, made A world of difference to the moral of the england team.

comentaters point to the fact that the West Indies are so weak.are they?I think like us they have some up and coming pace bowlers.

I will go as far as to say,the way our bowlers performed this spring,I am not sure the Ausralian batsmen would have coped with them.

A certain Mr vaughan should had enough nominations as well, cricket wrong sport....

I hear the equestrian/rowing/sailing contingent are looking good for gold medals, but only Paula Radcliff would have the profile to win at Sports Personality of the Year (if she's fit). I suppose if Pinsent wins his 4th, you'd have to factor him on too...but I think we'll have to look for the European Championship football if England do well...

Still, if Flintoff has a good summer and cricket fans make a point of nominating him, he COULD easily make it on the short list - Henman never seems to have any trouble, and he's pretty rubbish most of the time!!

I heard that one year, Dessert Orchird would have won, but had to be disquailified on the basis he wasn't human!!! Most unfair!!

Cricket has only featured in one olympic games: 1900 in Paris, when The Devon and Somerset County (representing Britain) played All-Paris (representing France). The Brits won, naturally!! I suppose a game of cricket takes to long for the olympics, although perhaps with the advent of Twenty-20, an argument could be made for including it at some stage. Mind you, we'd have the same problem as the football side: how do you make up a British team which would be entirely composed of English players! And it's not as though our test/OD players need more matches fitted in to their busy schedule!!!

If London get the games in 2012, apperantly the archery will be held at Lords!

The current England team has 2 Welshman in it and has had Scotsmen in the past as well
Edit: The Baseball is also going to be played at the oval

Fair enough, Rich - and, yes, the ECB is the English and Welsh Cricket board. What I actually meant was that there is no British team in the olympic football because of the various governing bodies not being able to agree - i.e the scottish fA know that few, if any scottish players would be selected for a british team. Some of the same issues would be raised if a British cricket team was proposed.

Morninkg Kirsty,

We used to send an ameteur side to play football at the Olympics, dont know if we still do.
It was always unfair the USSR could send their beat team, saying they were not pro football players, because they were payed as soldiers in the Red army, same with some other East European states as well
