Putting Gough and Anderson together makes sense though: they are both guys who need (and seem to have an aptitude for) an armoury of different deliveries... whose control shows through in well disguised variation rather than metronomic accuracy.

Personally I'd put Read in there with them and get him standing up to Anderson: it might cost Anderson 4-5 mph... but having the batsmen pegged at the crease would mean he could pitch the ball up more... and his variation would enable him to get a lot of balls through to the 'keeper for stumping opportunities - could be a devastating partnership.

Harmison should be focussed exclusively on improving himself as a Test Match new-ball bowler.. and the ODI side should either take him the way he comes... or just leave him out: messing him up by getting him worried about ODI bowling and trying out slower balls, yorkers and the like is surely to be avoided at all costs.
Surely the model Grievous should be aspiring to is the Ambrose/Garner school? Ambrose clearly never really liked the one day game - I remember several people complaining that he couldn't even really be bothered with the world cup - but he was still a very handy performer. Garner on the other hand is generally considered one of the best ODI bowlers there has been. Harmison has looked poor in ODI's so far - so it seems he lacks the weaponary of those two greats, in which case playing the one day game is highlighting his technical deficiencies, which is much to his and our benefit. In some ways, it is possible for a test bowler to use the one day game to hone aspects of his game.

Personally, when I look at the England One-Day side I don't much fancy a lot of them. In particular Blackwell, Clarke, McGrath and Kirtley don't inspire any confidence in me whatsoever. I just look at these players and the way they go about their Cricket and don't see much in them, Clarke probably excepted as he is a youngster. Kirtley has neither the pace nor the guile for international cricket, McGrath is the Robert Croft of dobbing and Blackwell is an unreliable slogger who bowls a bit of dross. The likes of Strauss, Solanki (who hopefully just had a bad trot) and Collingwood inspire far more confidence and should be stuck with I think. Just make them practice their bowling more.

Solanki has shown more promise than the other guys McGrath and Clarke. Yet they drop him. Ok, he plays too many loose shots early on, but they could have at least worked with him. McGrath has a strike rate of 49 at ODI

I feel that there is one too many 'bits&pieces' player's in the current side. I wouldn't critise the use of one or two of this kind of player - they all bring something to the side- but we also need some players with clearly defined roles. Expecting Blackwell to bowl in the last 10 overs (as he did on Saturday) is unfair on him - he's an aggressive batsmen who can score runs quickly and also bowl a few overs in the mid section of the innings.

Howdy all. Blackwell sees himself as an allrounder. On any given day he should be able to perform one of those roles to decent standard. Its unfair to expect him to take 5 wickets and score 50 each time he plays, freddie often does one or the other ie score 43 but didnt bowl great, time before not much in the way of runs, decent bowling figures. Unfortunalty time might have run out for blackwell. He hast done much with either, and he doesnt seem to click with vaughan (like our friend ashly does). Obviously not a great fielder. His only chance in the future is to work hard on his bowling as giles replacement. i dont know whether he'd do that though.

Blacky bowled fairly well in the 2002/03 VB Series. His stats were something like 11 wickets at 27 with an economy rate of just over 4. Surely better then what Giles would have done??

Hi Richie

He will come good,he needs to get in a bit of form,a fews runs hear, and a few wickets, and it will all start to come together for him.
He has the power, now we have to see if he has the temperment at the highest level.
