I don't suspect they've been in such a high pressure situation too often though. My money would still be on the arrogant Brown Caps.

Yeah I guess. It just seems weird that a county which consistently produces top-class bowlers should sign the quintessential journeyman trundler. Incidentally, I notice Blain is listed in the Second XI section of the YCCC website!

We've a few promising quicks about the same age as Bresnan: Thornicroft, Patterson and a lad called Chris Gilbert who's reputed to be pretty rapid. Personally I can't wait to see how the young leggie, Mark Lawson develops. He had some good moments in the U19 WC and is being coached by Warne's mentor, Terry Jenner.

Glamorgan seem to have continued their impressive start to the season in the one-day format.

I know yesterday's game was against one of the minor counties and I also realise that he is now 33, but would anyone else agree that Robert Croft is streets ahead of Gareth Batty as a one day player?

Yes, but he is Welsh so he would have to be 10 times better to get a chance

Yorks always have these young bowlers on the edges, and thats really encouraging. The club is in a bit of a mess and we have to make sure that these guys stay with Yorkshire and get the right environment to flourish. When Yorks won the cahmionship we had Gough, Silverwood, Hoggard, White, Hamilton and Sidebottom competeing for places, in addition to people like Dawson and a number of youngsters. When you have lots of young players, competition for places is the order of the day - it sets the bar they have to reach higher and pushes them harder. That summer, what they had to aim for was borderline test quality - all of those 7 have played in tests. This season, the bar is definately set at Jon Blain. Not quite the same is it.....

It has been said that when ENG cricket is strong, world cricket is strong beacue all the other test teams desperately want to beat ENG, and it makes them redouble thier efforts. It is also said that when Yorkshire cricket is strong, ENG is strong and it has always been in the seam bowling that that has been most evident. If these young lads come through - and the door is wide open - the future looks bright.

I'm not sure I totally subscribe to that theory (although the selectors have been guilty in the past of selecting Glamorgan players who have done well just as they are losing form - as happened to Ed Smith last summer) especially given that the England coach used to be the Glamorgan coach.

In Croft's case I think it is more that Fletcher felt let down when Croft pulled out of the India tour (and he has also spouted off to the media once too often for my liking and no doubt Fletcher's).

Other than Simon Jones do you think there are any other current Glamorgan players who might have a future at the highest level Rich?
