Girls are pretty vicious, especially as hocky was meant to be non-contact...I got two concussions and countless brusies to my knees from being caught by a hockey stick or hit by the ball...

My fav olympic memory is us beating the Germans at hockey in 1988. Barry Davis: 'where were the Germans? But quite frankly, who cares!'. Great!!! Davis loses his 'fair play to all' attitiude in the heat of the moment!

I played a little cricket a university...wasn't much good, but we had fun! Can't bowl to save my life! Top score with the bat:26*!

Kirsty,I have never had concussion,I would not like it,none contact I should co co.

I love it when we stuff the Germans at anything,Football,Hocky,Hopscotch....

26 runs more than me i hardly got caught, cause I hardly hit the ball.Biggest dissapointment got 2 wickets, never got my hat trick, and I really tweaked that ball.

I also love beating the Americans...1991 World Championship 4x4 relay..Kris Akabuisi, Roger Black, Derek Redmond, John Regis....brill!!!

That 26* was a fluke, really. I played and missed so much it must have looked like I was being attacked by a whole troop of flies! I would have loved to be able to get even ONE wicket...Anyway, it's the taking part that counts and all that rubbish...

Thought I'd better join in briefly with this xenophobia.

However I do have to say that this is the first (and I hope last) time I've had the American Budweisser described as "ACE."
The advertisements I quite good...but the beer tastes of absolutely nothing but the inside of an unthoroughly cleaned vat.

On the other hand, it isn't really beer at all...it is the sort of garbage that one drinks ice cold to quench the thirst on a hot day. Like so many other's with varying strengths and on and on and on....
I can bore for England on that subject.

It's very important to beat the Americans at everything...
...I love that story about the 1979 defeat in The Americas Cup. OK yachting, not the greatest sporting spectacle, but the Americans were so up their own backsides on this occasion (and for decades before hand.)
I can't remember the real name of the trophy, but it was nicknamed The Americas cup, because they always won it.
In 1979, an Australian consortium won it. So presumably after all the champagne spraying and general gluttony that goes on with that sort of thing, the Australian skipper was looking forward to being presented with the trophy.
Unfortunately they couldn't give it to him, because it was NAILED to a shelf in the trophy cabinet.
That was the initial story that broke in the press...it then transpired that the Yacht club in question, point-blank refused to give up the trophy. I can't remember how it all played out in the end. But for Goodness sake...its only a cup.

Its not as though it was a delicate little urn containing some hundred year old ashes.

Stories of American bad sportsmanship are legion...tales of shouting and screaming while Europeans are leaning over crucial puts in the Ryder cup...replaying last seconds of an Olympic basket ball final against the USSR, because they didn't win the first time...World Series Baseball (?!)...

...very important for them to lose. America first and then Germany. I don't care very much either way about the French.
They come late to the party and disappear when they are bored.

I like to know, wich you hate most.Bud or the yanks .I will drop the Bud,Ifind it refreshing in summer, but I will instead go for Rye whisky, second only to scotch. They make that in Canada as well.

Trouble with having a pop at the yanks, and I agree, they are up themselves, but they are so bloody good at every thing.

Boxing they had no L Lewis, trouble is neither do we now.

Yea we should try and beat them, after France,Germany,Belgiam,Spain, Holland and Denmark are Ok.You say the Yanks do a lot of sledging, catching on fast is it not?

Not a new thing, not a bad thing yank bashing,my dad used to tell me that during the war, most man said this about the Yanks!!!!!

They are overpaid, they are oner sexed, and they are over here.

In cricket, sledging is between balls, not while the batsman is taking his shot. I'm not a huge golf fan, but it seems to me that when the pros ask for hush from the crowds and stand bolt upright when they hear a couple of cameras go, they should understand that shouting: "Yo the man" and "U-S-A, U-S-A" just as someone's about to take a shot is unforgiveable.
And in a close contest...tantamount to cheating.

American golfers always remark how polite, knowlegdeable and intelligent the crowds are at the British Open. Are they just being nice to the hosts? Or do you suppose that American golfing audiences contain a large yobbish element?

This is a very good point, andit has got my mind ticking,I used to be a big golf fan,but something is in the back of my mind here,no I dont condone it,British crowds were always well behaved, they were partizan if we had a good British player ie Jacklin, but were always quick to applaud a good shot from whoever played it,and whatever the nationalety,a player was always cheered up the eighteanth hole.

Then there was an incedent and the USA players, complained of coughing, and camera flashes, when the players were about to take there shot, but that to me was thoughlesness, not yobbish behavour.

I missed the Ryder cut last year, you must have ment that for the so called fans to chant their USA name when a player is about to take a shot, that is yobbish, and I hope it is not a trend, suprised you dont like it much, thats the best sport we have to stuff the Yanks
The crap thing is though,it is not Britain and Ireland anymore,it is EUROPE
Sledging in cricket to me adds to the spice!!!
