Don't forget that Read's keeping was absolutely appalling in 1999

In view of all the county runs hes scoring perhaps the Read/Jones debate should be widened to include Foster?

Well, it's a well known fact that the people of this board are all cricketing genius's and know a thing or two about the sport - however, if we were all selectors we'd never get a team picked! Looking at the poll attached to this, I think it's fairly clear how people are thinking.

Some food for thought on the debate though - Stewart was essentially and inferior keeper to Russell- yet in the long run it was proven that it was better for the side as a whole to play him. The more often he kept at test level the better he kept.

The same situation is true here. Jones has got to be given at least 7 tests to prove himself and to improve his keeping - a decision should be made then, and until then all this conjecture should be thrown in the bin, and we should let the lad respond to the criticism he will obviously have seen and heard. If he goes away and really practises his keeping and it improves noticably then England are on to a winner.

As it stands now, it's not such a great problem anyway, and he should be left alone to work on his game throughout the summer!

TFC

That's all sensible stuff, but you're forgetting one important point - there are plenty of pro-Read people who have the knives out for Jones, for no other logical reason other than they want him as the better keeper!

Now then Scott !

I am amongst the Pro-Read camp but voted for Jones to keep the gloves until at least the end of the summer. If he keeps like he did at Lord's then we have to pass them on, probably not to Read. If he keeps better as the summer goes on then he will deservedly retain his place.

I can't say I liked the way Read was shoved out as soon as the first decent batting track came into view. It's like picking a spinner in the Caribbean and then dropping him once the series in the sub-continent comes around, not entirely fair. But life ain't fair and Chris Read has probably found that the hard way. However, Jones is now in and in he will stay unless his keeping lets him down big time. His batting won't, that's for sure!

Ah well Woz,

I think it's all a case of perspective, or is it selective memories? I'm sure someone earlier in the thread mentioned that Read kept pretty crap in 1999 - and I'm positive that Foster had a 'mare in his first couple of matches, with his keeping. I just think it's a knee jerk reaction by two or three characters on this board who should know better. Give the lad a few games, and judge him on a level playing field with Foster and Read.

In infuriates me that in this country we have a culture that knocks performances quickly without waiting to see how players develop. I appluad the criticism of Wheelie Bin (just as I am prepared to accept that some people think he did well last test) and of Tresco as the deteriation in their form or technique has been apparent for some time. I'm guilty of poo-pooing clarke, but at least I've bided my time before laying in to him!

I find it ironic that Wheelie Bin should obviously be replaced, yet there are no candidates - yet Jones shouldn't and people are touting options for him left, right and centre!

Oooooh it makes me mad! I need a sit down and a big bowl of Go-Cat.

I can't agree with that TTFC. There are a few posters on here that are complete morons. One in particular (he shall remain nameless, but suffice to say his name begins with a g and he looks like a walking carpet) talks absolute ****e. He once compared my good self with Frank Spencer! For Christs sake! And all because I broke my nose by running into a wall!

Idiot.

How are the centrally contracted waitering skills coming on? Get out in the middle and score some runs - you freeloader!
