Hi David

Sos no,he cannot be included int the debate ,at least until he has compleated at least one innings battisg in the England team.

Reason being David, his merit as a keeper, these days will not be taken into consideration.

I don't remember it being that bad. Byes alone Read conceded 11 in three Tests as a raw twenty year old. In one Test Jones has conceded 23.

How far below "absolutely appalling" does that maker Jones' performance at Lord's ?

Im not particularly pro Foster. Just pointing out that theres more than two possible credible keepers. In fact I would stick with Jones for the forseeable future as I dont think you necessarily need your best keeper with a seam dominated attack.

There certainly are David. Mark Wallace has been mentioned regularly on this board.

Anyone else noticed the interesting trend towards non-english wicketkeepers i.e. those brought up in S Africa or Australia now plying their trade over here?? Nic Pothas, Gerard Brophy, Matt Prior, Tim Ambrose, Geraint Jones ....

Zim (if they ever get their lives sorted out) have the vastly superior Ray Price.

Banglandesh have Rafique, who I would suggest is their best player.

I think though Giles is better than Vettori (in current form) and anything that the West Indies have.

I would go so far as to suggest that India did not have Kumble and Habarjan, would actually have a need for someone with Giles's ability?
Flanny Baby, I must take issue! Zim and Bangladesh are a given (in fact think Bang have about 3 SLa's who are better thanhim!) But India!!!!! No way, there must be half a dozen up and coming spinners who are better than Giles. Although they haven't quite kicked off at Test level, they have Kartik and Powar waiting in the wings who will bowl well at test level I'd guess.

Besides, I don't hate the man, or think he's a dreadful cricketer - he's just dull, negative and going through a **** poor patch of form. Other players get dropped for it. Mind you - you could be right about Vetorri, he has more wickets, at a better strike rate and a lower average - so is obviously the better bowlr - but he is a little out of sorts at the moment. Interestingly, his best bowling is 7-87 he has 7 5wkt hauls and 1 x 10wkt match. ashley's best is 5-67, with 3 x 5wkt hauls and no 10-fers. I just thuink that at his best Vetorri would be a matchwinner and Giles wouldn't.

I'd be well happy to be proved wrong though!!!

Hadnt noticed that N.E. perhaps that just generally reflects the increasing number of overseas-born players in county cricket?

I have seen Kartik bowl, and I wasn't overly impressed, I have never seen Powar though. So you may have a point.

I think I was agreeing with you RE:Zim and Bangla?

My view in Giles is that he is not the best, and never will be, but sadly I don't think that at the moment there are better spinners who can also do a job with the bat, apart from Batty - and lets not geo there!!

Yup no worries Flanny - I was agreeing with you agreeing with me - if you get what I mean?

Just to toss another couple of englishmen into the fray, I noticed that Middlesex picked two young spinners yesterday, Peploe and Dalrymple, both of whom got three wickets apiece against Lancs. Dalrymple picked up Law and Hooper I think! Peploe got both openers. Ithink they have talked about Peploe being very tall and with a great arm ball - if that is the case, and he comes on this season, it could give him something different to other finger-spinners.

Mind you, I'm very fat and only have an arm ball - so the same may go for me as well!

Saw Dalrymple bowl one over at the Oval last week, he got carte for a six, then took Ormonds wicket, and that was his only over, Weeks did most of the bowling. The intresting thing is that he then went on to make a huge score with the bat,

Don't know about Pepole though..

H'mm strangley, Weekes only got 4 overs yeaterday whilst dalrymple got 37! I wonder if they are easing in new blood. weekes has been a great servant to Middx, but Dalrymple has scored plenty runs, and if his bowling comes on, he'll fill that role.
