Stinks,Well there is a split within the selectors, since that high handed action by vaughan and Fletcher, they acted without regard for the full selection board,O k Jones has batted well up to now,but Read was prommised the one day place,Jones does not have the monopoly ,of putting up good performances.

I think that read is the best bet for the ODIs and Jones (if he can keep wicket like he has in PATCHES this test) should play in tests. Read seldom has to bat in the oDIs so if he ends up batting , everything else has gone south batting wise. And generally he seems better becasue he doesnt need to face alot of short accurate bowling which he cant cope with.

Simon Mann has been banging on about Jones being selected for the ODI team on the strength of his batting throughout this test. Why should performances in tests have any influence on selection for ODIs and vice versa (other than potential test players being blooded through ODIs as a test of temperament)? As I understand matters Read has a better one day batting record than Jones in any case. Furthermore, whilst runs would appear to be paramount in ODIs, byes conceded could be crucial and the momentum of a game can be changed in an instant (for example by a stumping off a wide down the leg side). Dropped chances are also likely to be more costly. Therefore, as the side is already packed with batsmen and allrounders I think you can afford to carry a keeper who has less natural batting talent.

Perhaps he ment as well as Read? I wouldn't mind them both playing in the ODI's. In the ODI series against the WI we were shown up by not having enough specialist batsmen. Peitersen, Bell and Jones should be considered.

Your post is in to parts really,a squad system would appear to be the faiest, and would give more flexabillity to the selectors, honing down to 12 men on the day. Your second point I agree whole heartedly,it would be counterptoductive, and stupid to drop Read from the ODIs,We all have to get behind Jones in the Test Team, regardless of our thinking at the way he was selected,Well done jones, but vaughan and Fletcher as good as said,Read was the one day keeper, henve the split.

i don't understand? If you mean it's a poor selection, fair enough, everyones team would be different reasons for it is that the bats mainly pick themselves (although i wouldn't have vaughan, but everyone else loves him so he'd never be dropped), read is the best keeper and good at odi's, pieterson can give some spin, flintoff would open the bowling with hoggard as both are good white ball bowlers, and then anderson as another good white ball bowler with harmison in simply because he's our best bowler and it might teach him to get better line and length Last edited by Victor Frankenstein : 07-06-2004 at 12:47 PM.
