Is there much of a precedent for a guy like Jones being hauled around a tour series and then never going on to get a cap? I'm sure there are loads of no-test touring wonders.. but I just can't think of any!

Warren Hegg was always one to go away on tour and never get a game ahead of Stewart. As soon as he opened his mouth to express his disapointment though he was dropped and consequently has never been picked since, which is a shame, he deserved a chance in my opinion.

I dont see Read as having a future . England should go the same route as with Alec stewart. Take a good batsman and give him the gloves. Trescothick would be my choice as hes not convincing me as a Test opener. Get him and freddy together to blitz the old ball.

As for the TMS boards I have been waiting a month to get on and have begun to give up on them.

hai,

Read, We Could Still Move Up to Him Give Him Chances And Make Him Well Stand Upon As A Good Batsman, The ECB Must Make Some Quick Decesions On This Issue.

They Should Look For Some Good Coaches For Keeping Alone Who Train Up Into Persons Like Stewart.

That would be a nightmare to be honest...its bad enough every other thread going on about it now let alone 5 years time !

I imagine that is the same fear that Chris Read suffers from Rachael.
Ten years wondering if he is the sole wearer of England's gauntlets.
Possibly this is not a bad thing...though we will have to discuss it at length during every series until 2014.

What I keep reminding everybody is that Chris Read is still young.

He is now the same age as Russell was on debut, perhaps another 100 or so days older.

The question in my mind is: If a 29 year old Jack Russell was our current 'keeper, would everyone want him dropped in favour of G.O.Jones because the current Kent man is a better batsman?

Afternoon RBLC (this is Thursday now, they don't seem to tell you). Nice site, could do with a little bit of tweaking, but a lot faster than the Beeb. Talking of which, it seems to have fallen over again. It looks like Read is a good keeper, but not a very good bat. These days, they need to be both. Maybe the odd dropped catch or missed stumping is worth it if they can score a ton. That puts pressure on the other side. I'm open for debate.

I think you probably need look no further than several reserve keepers and a few second or third spinners.

Did Graham Swann ever get a Test match?

Afternoon FG, afternoon everyone. Agree with the nned for runs from a wickie. Despite our current top 5 being a long ahead of everyone else in the frame I cant remember a time when more than 3 clicked. Thats why we need a Jones unless read gets his finger out and starts scoring runs.

Afternoon Farmer,

Of all the gin joints in all the world as Bogie would have said. Like you I am experiencing some difficulty in finding my way around this site although it seems to offer much more than the BBC board.

You are right, wicketkeepers do need to contribute to the batting but not at the expense of their skill. It is vital to have your best keeper playing if you have conditions which favour the spinners and what about the psychological advantage of having a keeper who can stand up to your fast/medium bowlers. After all Giles is good enough to bat at seven anyway which would take some of the pressure off Read.

It must be wonderful having Brenda to help out on the farm. Certainly keeps your mind off the sheep.

Regards,

Peter Foy.
