Atherton rarely had the good fortune to play in a side that had the luxury of focussing exclusively on Test victories. Rarely in his career did he EVER have a side that made that a credible option. The Test side, throughout most of his career, was under pressure to avoid disgraceful failures to compete.. and under pressure to make sure that games did at least last 5 days.
