I think in terms of our first choice team, it would be reasonable to say our bowling is better, where our batting is better is in the depth if we can't pick the first choice team.

I think you are spot on Alison, our pace attck is dependent of us getting no injuries to key players.

What makes you think we are not competing with India/Australia/Shri Lanka on the batting front Rachael, we have to play then first, to get the full picture, much better than ratings.

And maybe, the fact that England are doing so well, despite having a comparatively weak batting line-up as you point out, points to this: England do have a better bowling attack than a batting line-up!

I know this contradicts your thread starter Ern, apologies!
No Maranello you do not contradict me at all, I have always said, England have the better bowling attack, but don't have the same strength in depth as the batting, no matter how strong that is.
Point being, injuries to our key bowlers makes England just a bit better than a poor team, our bowing has no depth.

India..hmm...are you seriously suggesting

Vaughan + Tresco + Strauss + Thorpe + Key + Flintoff...

is better than

Sehwag + Gambhir + Dravid + Tendulkar + Ganguly + Laxman ....

three of the Indian guys would walk into a World XI.. two on current form, the third because his initials are SRT, and according to Bradman, he is the best batsman since him.

I think it would be interesting both sides batting against the same bowlers, in the same conditions, who knows?.

Everything can be interesting, but England have by far the weaker batting line-up compared to India, if we are comparing the class, results over time and ability of the top six of each country.
