Really? That sounds like a strange way to run an army. What do we have a skipper for then?

Presumably to run the team on the field. It makes sense that the batsman due in next has the choice.

If the captain said tough, your in! - Imagine the mindset the batsman would be in at the crease.

England's batting in each of the last two first innings has been nothing short of appalling. The South African's haven't bowled us out, we've got ourselves out. The shots played yesterday by Strauss and Tresco were very poor.

Well you may be right there but at least he scores some runs unlike Mr Read who couldn't even score when it didn't matter.

I don't believe Mr Read ever got to the crease with England in a particularly strong position. Anyway, I don't believe Read would have scored the runs in the second innings at Kingsmead. However, Jones has not shown, thus far in his Test Career, any penchance for a fight. He bats in the same vein all of the time, and sometimes that's not appropriate. Sorry and all that, it's just the way I see it.

No, I agree with you Notts Exile but I'm afraid we are going to have to stick with him for the time being as he is the best we have got and probably the only one out of the 4 main keepers-Foster,Read,Prior being the others that can get test centuries and that is what Duncan Fletcher is looking for.

Dare I say it, Flintoff's career is not littered with many back to the walls performances. Giles and Thorpe again - let's have a repeat of Port of Spain and Trent Bridge.
