The gopod news is that the side does have some decent bowling options: 4 specialists and 4 part time spinners.

I'd agree that Ganguly does look like the weak link as a cricketer.. but he's without question the obvious candidate to captain... not for his on field abilities (replaceable) but because whoever fronts up this Asian team is going to have a media job bigger than anything ANY of them have ever seen before.. and talking about a huge disaster and relief effort rather than about cricket.

Ganguly is supremely articulate, polished, confident and experienced with the media.. and maybe that matters more than any on-field cricketing ability.

Pabs made a good point in another post, we have to remember I guess, that this is not supposed to be a best of Asia vs best of rest of the world team - just Asia XI vs RoW XI - XI select players , not neccesarily the best. It's a charity match after all.

When I think of Ganguly and his media handling skills and his leadership skills in general - I tend to come up with one word - hardnosed - Ganguly almost dogmatic in that sense, not everyone's favorite, most probably either in your good books or bad books - no middle ground - pepole love Ganguly or they hate him.

On a side note, I do think Atapatu is a fairly level headed skipper him self, and I would tend to opine he would be just capable of leading a asian xi as Ganguly, or anyone for that matter.

I think Malik may have been left out due to either that injury or his suspect action. It does render him somewhat useless if he can't bowl.

He's averaged 50 something with the bat this season batting at 3

No question the guy can bat, but well enough to make a 'best of asia' XI ?

Don't forget we're playing in Melboune too, his big knocks this year mostly came from the sub-continent.
