Dose not happen in England like that RD,

If Butcher fails to make the next series squad, he is finished, that is 99.99999%.

They have this strange system in England, that when they get a player into form, and he gets injured.

No one seems to know where cats and elephants go when they die, find them, and you will find John Crawley amoungst other, did no wrong, but vanished.

Crawley had that resurgence in 2002. I remember seeing his century against India at Lord's, then *poof* he was gone.

I think Key's inconsistency is largely due to the fact that when he plays, he's always playing to gain a place in the side.
If he knew he was a regular, perhaps he'd just get down to business.
His season with Kent shows just what he is capable of, and personally I think he's got what it takes to succeed as an England player, but not if he's constantly in - out - in - out, "ooh are we going to go for Butcher, Bell, Key or Mr X today?"
Some consistency - unavoidable at the moment with Butcher's injury problems - may be just what it takes to see Key settle.

Moss,

Hick,Raprakash,Crawley,Malcolm,Ed Smith,Key,Foxy Fowler,Edmunds,Tuffers,Never had the extended runs, their Test place was always in danger. So they were always under pressure.
This is just the tip of the iceburge, the England selectors, have ruined many careers with their impatient attitude to new players.

Must say D Pringle got more than his fair share of chances, I and see him now, bright summers day, stroling to the crease, I can also remember his cheerfull boyish grin, as he walked back to the pavilion, with yet another duck.

Such has been the England selection policy, that saw Devon Malcolm destroy South Africa, only to be dropped, a short time later.

Small rated rant over.

Good rant.

You make a very good point.
In this competitive world of cricket, players who stumble initially and are occasionally inconsistent, despite fantastic county records or one-off international contributions are thrown to the dogs and quickly replaced, with some notable exceptions e.g. Flintoff.

We were talking about Batsmen....but...

How about Anderson, Harmison, Hoggard, Jones and Flintoff. All in their early to mid-twenties, all going to be around for four-five years?
