| GLad yopu cleared that up NE, I was thinking freddie was the most defensivly minded out of those 3, knowing full well if you throw down enoough short stuff (ceertainly this series) it will end up down the throat of deep backward square sooner rather than later. Ditto Jones. Bell has test class written all over him, pietersen, to me at least remains more of a ODI option on paper, at least til I see him play against decent opposition.

I do agree that Bell is more in the mould of a Test batsman than Pietersen but the trend these days does seem to be towards batsmen who are capable of taking an attack apart and I think KP will fit the bill perfectly. He is arrogant (some may say confident) but that's no problem, the best players around tend to be arrogant. I would have no problems with him being in the team for the Ashes, many others wouldn't be so bold! This is the man who against the top Indian opposition scored lots of runs in an environment completely foreign to him. He'll swim not sink when he gets thrown in.

Why do people regard Collingwood as just a ODI specialist? Against Sri-Lanka he showed as much ability to play a test style innings as anyone else in the team, in ODI's he plays according to the situation and has come in on a number of occasions with England in trouble early on, and ground out the middle of the innings before accelerating towards the end. Pieterson, has shown he is real quality at county and A team level. Bell,Collingwood,Flintoff,Jones and Pieterson as the middle order of an England one day squad looks really exciting to me. I don't see any of these being out of place in a test squad either.

Possibly the same as Jonty Rhodes...Fielding is excellent, and when they don't do well with the bat they make it up with the field. PC's medium pacers wouldn't trouble test batsmen..but could get him a wicket or two in the ODI's. That is possibly why.

Trescothic Strauss Bell VAUGHAN Collingwood Pieterson Flintoff G Jones Giles Hoggard Harmison (Harmison,Hoggard,Giles (or Jones for any of the three) + Freddy)+ Vaughan/Bell/Collingwood/Pieterson or you drop one of Bell/Pieterson/Collingwood if the conditions require 5 bowlers For example Giles isn't needed for a test at Headingly play 4 seamers, Lords you need the spinner and probably 5 bowlers. Touring India? Giles is a shoe in use Vaughan and Pietersen as supplementry spinners. (Always thought Vaughan is a much better bowler than he himself realises.)
