England's plan was to play relatively slowly, keeping wickets in hand so that they could have a real bash during the last 10 or so overs. The bounderies were very short and it was a workable plan. All Vaughan did was stick to the plan, if he and Pietersen had stayed in England would most likely have won. Vaughan was starting to play a lot more shots towards the end, just a shame he was caught as he was starting to free his arms. I really think the anchor role is what he should be playing for England, smashing sixes isn't his game. 300, or whatever England got is a pretty good score under the lights, the blame for the day should be attributed to the bowlers not the batsmen. England are desperatley missing the control Flintoff gives them and while Gough was good tonight, Hoggard and ali weren't and Kemp just teed off towards the end. Too many good length balls clearing the ropes. In this series Vaughan averages 52.00, compared to 19.60 for Tresco, 17.80 for Strauss and 24.60 for Geraint Jones. Not too bad, only big Kev at 169 is outdoing him. |

| As i have said in other threads - perhaps it would be best to make Vaughan a test specialist. Australia did with S.Waugh and M.Taylor and the one day team was better for it. Vaughan is a classy player but as far as one dayers go, you would think enough is enough. Why is it that he can,t produce an innings like last night when England are chasing 230 - 250?

| For me they got the tactics and approach completely wrong. Why have a slow start when for the first fifteen overs the opposition can only have two men out of the circle? Vaughan and Jones should have hit more boundaries in the first fifteen without a doubt (if Jones is to open becase of his natural attacking game then what is the point of having him play that role???). The management proved inflexible by bringing Strauss in a four when the situation was crying out for KP to get in as soon as possible. What sort of shots were Strauss and Vaughan playing?? little dabs and sweeps ...... hit the bloody ball properly! It was pathetic to say the least. It wasn't until KP got in that we even started to look like we wanted to win. If they are Fletcher's tactics and team selections then I shall be bold enough to say that we will never make it as a one day side while he is at the helm. |

| I was going to open a thread up on this one this morning. What struck me last night was that the England management had absolutely no idea of how to chase this total. Depriving England's form bat (by a long long chalk) from over half the overs of the game was not just criminal but totally negligent. The first 15 overs were a disgrace (maybe they should have sent in Giles first up with express instructions to throw the willow). Vaughan's batting was appalling. There was absolutely no way he should have been allowed to, when chasing over 300, show the levels of pure arrogance that Hussain used to do (remember his slow 100 in the Natwest final against India that eventualy left us 30 runs short). Pietersen should have come in at 4, if it had not been for his heriocs we would have got nowhere near the total - if it hadn't of been for Strauss getting run out we would have been 50 short. To bring Strauss in then (when has he ever scored at over a run a ball in a one day match?) was a total lack of any understanding on the dynamics of one day cricket. If I was KP, I'd try to see if any other country wants him. He seems to be wasting his time with England. And to think he wasn't originally in the squad. |

KP is making the other batsmen look VERY silly indeed. I think fatigue must be playing a part with those that have been out there the longest. It's either that or they're rubbish! And I know which one I would rather believe. Had Strauss and Tresco opened we could have had the same slow / solid start but with the added bonus of Jones coming in down the order (where he has to be more effective surely???). |
