what happened to 'conference cricket' which was started up a few years back? they would often include an emerging nation with the north, south, and central conferences to make up an even number. Maybe NZ could play in oz as a north and south island teams - like the current state of origin match or short series

in reply to a much earlier post . . . Yes, Craig Spearman now plays as CD's designated overseas player and as an Englishman in county cricket - pretty tricky

| Andy, you are the only one of the nine participants in this poll who has not voted for Australia. An intriguing choice in Sri Lanka...care to elaborate on your reasons, to educate all of us here who are mesmerised by the Aussie-brilliance...

Aha. I was waiting for someone to ask me that. My opinion is that Australia are the best in the world, but that doesn't necessarily mean that their domestic structure is the best. The reason why Australia are the best team in the world is that they have by far the best youth development structure. My reason to vote for Sri Lanka was purely on the results of my research and my reasoning is that the Sri Lankan structure does what no other one does and that is integrate a club level structure into the regional structure and makes it work. The regional structure at the top level ensures that players can develop beyond a certain level, but the fact that the next level below is a club structure provides a much better link from the grass roots to the top level than, say, in the UK. If this type of structure could be manipulated and applied to English cricket, you could restore some of the romance and competitiveness into the English competitions, and cups in particular, by allowing clubs - often many of whom have several former first class cricketers - to compete with the big boys (counties). Also, I haven't seen anyone offer a reason to why the Australian structure is so superior to any other.

Zimbabwe's is the best. Not for the standard of cricket, but for the structure. Two leagues, Division A and B which four teams play each other twice. In the Faithwear ODD cup, 5 teams, Namibia come in to it, and they play each other twice. Great structure.

HI all. This is my first post here. I voted for Australia because from what little I've heard, we do have the strongest domestic comp in the world. The games are few and far between which fosters hunger, and because there is a lot of competition in trying to get into the national side, players are motivated to play at their best. Having said that, there is a problem that is probably common world-wide, the gap between international level cricket and domestic cricket. Any mooted global '2nd string' comp would have to address that. I'd be interested in everyone's thoughts.

i think they should have a world cup styled tournament where each country brings out there best team out of domestic cricketers that have played under 10 ODI's I think that it would a great way to see which players are coming up through the ranks of domestic cricket from all around the world.

Sounds like an A-team style competition to me Rowan, it would be a great idea but I don't belive it is popular with the ICC.
