British Asians

It's good to see Monty Panesar in an England shirt

If he plays (which I hope he does) he will be the first Sikh to represent England. Now I am not one to apply the so called "Tebbit Test" but it is great to see the likes of Kabir Ali, Owais Shah, Vikram Solanki and Saj Mahmood, keen to play for the country of birth over their country of origin.

For me the Asian population in Britain is an untapped well of talent, it would be great to see more British Asian's in and around the England set up. I know a lot of this has sadly been caused by the attitudes of many Cricket Clubs in the UK, forcing Asians to create their own leagues and therefore miss out on mainstream selection. But if the talent it there it should be encouraged and properly developed.

Would be interested to hear from British Based Asian's on this board what more could be done?

Not just cricket but football needs to encourage British Asians too.The talent is there if you look for it and help it develop.

Certainly many British Asians may have "asian wrists" such as Nasser had (well sometimes). I think it's great to have all different cultures and origins playing for England and all test nations and it should be welcomed. I hope that if there are any talented youngsters out there then they get the same chances as everyone else.

Had our cricket not been in the up as it has been, and continued "mid table" for 5 or s oyears and would have been quite possible we'd have a side made of 90% Asians, who traditionally play more cricket than white kids of a similar age. As our cricket has been on the up, more kids of all races are playing cricket which has to be a good thing.

You mean the country of their parent's origin?

Technically yes, but the fact is that like many people who come to live in the UK they should hang on to their origins and their unique culture, origins are not necessarily related to place of birth.

We will see many more Asian cricketers in the future playing for England. This is because cricket is very popular in Asian children. If you look at the parks where I live, you will see many Asians boys playing cricket than white/black boys.

One of the reason there have not been many Asian cricketers playing for the country or in Domestic cricket is because of the cricket clubs. All the top clubs in my city don't have many Asian children playing for them for some reason?

I think its great to see different poeple from different ethnic backgrounds playing cricket for England, as England is a country where there are many people from different ethnic backgrounds.

The title of this thread says it all "British Aisions" .
Players the like of Panaser should really be used with care while he is young, because if he gets in and plays like his mentor Bishan Bedi, then at last England will have a player of great skill, I had the privelage of watching Bishan Bedi, and with the UK having a high percentage of Aisions, we really should unearth more talent.

Waseem - I know and it's crazy, there is so much talent being restricted by this.

There is a three fold problem in my opinion

1. Some clubs have historically been unfriendly to Asians
2. Some clubs have found themselves "over-taken" by Asians - which has caused other clubs to fear a similar situation
3. Some Leagues have been created that are all-Asian and do not play in the normal, County recognised, structures

Ernest, I do hope so I feel if we can get a very high profile and very obvious Asian cricketer (like Panesar - Nasser Hussain was very un-Asian in many ways) but if he plays well and succeeds, hopefully we can tap into that talent pool.
