Still four County matches to play before we start the WAT England A team selection process but I've posted the likely qualifiers from each Division to give you a chance to start thinking about your WAT team. I've bolded the players who have previously been selected in the WAT team. They have WAT after their club name. Other players who have played for England A or ODIs in the past 12 months have also been bolded and coloured. They have either ODI, ENG A or ENG A/ODI after their club name.

Unfortunately, Liam Plunkett has already played 6 Test matches and, therefore, is disqualified. However, Sajid Mahmood has only played 4 Test matches and will have played 5 Test matches at the end of the Pakistan series. So, he is qualified to be selected in the WAT Eng A team. Ian Blackwell, who missed much of the season due to a shoulder injury is also qualified for selection. He has played in a number of ODIs for England in the past 12 months.

What's striking in these lists is how few division 1 players stand out. It's basically just Joyce, Prior, Yardy, Compton and Adams with the bat, Onions, Shreck and Tremlett with the ball and Mascarenhas, Dalrymple and Bresnan as all-rounders: that's enough for a side... but only just!

The div two crew is even thinner: arguably just Powell, Gidman, Newman, Clarke, Afzal, Sales, Kabir Ali, Broad and Doshi!

I think the depth of talent at our disposal was severely effected by injuries to Vaughan, S Jones and Giles. Their replacements: Cook, Plunkett and Panesar would walk into this years WAT side but, alas, they have played too many Test matches to qualify even if those injured senior players return.

After a quick glance at the two lists, it seems the pace bowling could be Tremlett, Mahmood, Broad/Bresnan with Clarke providing support as the batting all-rounder. The spinner could be Doshi, Loudon or Dalrymple. The wicketkeeping looks to be a three-way contest between Wallace, Foster and Prior. The batting is wide open but Newman has had another great year and looks set to retain his WAT place. Mascarenhas has also had another great year and will be hard to dislodge as the bowling all-rounder.

Mahmood? He's only played 4 county championship matches this year due to being away on international duties... where, aside from a single brief spell near ther beginning of the season and a few decent overs in the last match he's bowled downright abysmally, showing no promise whatsoever.

If you can count a guy's passable overs on one person's fingers and toes he really ought not to be in contention!

Mahmood showed promise in the last match and if he has another good match at the Oval in the final match it's going to be hard to ignore him for a WAT spot.

That's not fair or correct I think he bowled well on his debut - took a few wickets with what little cricket he has played he has shown promise.

I don't count the one dayers at all, even established players were poor.

Yup.. his first spell (was it 3 overs? 5 overs? I can't recall) was promising. The rest of the match he went AWOL. In Fact, he went AWOL for the rest of the series against Sri Lanka AND for the business end of the current series against Pakistan... only rolling up to do something vaguely redeeming (for which his figures flattered him) at Headingly.

I've nothing against him... but it's not so impressive a performance as to overshadow those of other candidates like Onions and Shrek: the selectors may well be right to say he has greater long term promise (time will tell) but it is far from clear that he's done more to deserve a current W-A-T 'A' team place.
