He is not picked because the coach and co. don't believe he can be a good ODI player because of his weakness in fielding and batting.

Anyways I wouldn't mind Panesar not playing ODIs. ODIs will ruin Panesars bowling IMO, he will try to bowl flatter and faster to reduce the flow of runs and he will become defensive, he will lose his loop and ability to flight the ball if he plays ODIs, it will ruin his confidence, it will make him a worser bowler. Panesar should only concentrate at Test cricket.

I agree i want Panesar as a test bowler not wearing himself out playing one day games.

This would be my England XI:
  1. Marcus Trescothick
  2. Andrew Struass
  3. Ian Bell
  4. Kevin Pietersen
  5. Paul Collingwood
  6. Andrew Flintoff
  7. Dalrymple
  8. Ian Blackwell
  9. Chris Read
  10. Steve Harmison
  11. James Anderson
I believe we have a very good team, the players look good on paper the only thing left is for them to perform. Our openers look solid, we have a good anchor batsman in Ian Bell, and a great middle order in KP, Colly and Fred. After that we can hope for some quick fire runs from Dalrymple, Ian Blackwell and Chris Read. The bowling would be good as well, Harmison, Fred and Anderson as the quicks and Dalrymple and Blackwell as the spinners, remember this series is being played in India so spin will play a big part.

One of the reason I believe England have become a very bad ODI team is because of the coach. He has no sence on how to run a ODI team, he doesn't give out clear instructions and the players do not know what there roles are.

If this team is chosen reguraly and there is consistant selection of a team then England would have a good chance of winning the world cup next year because each player will know his role in the team. If we continue to have new players in the XI each game, England will go no where as a team.

I agree with the above. I finally gave up on Fletcher as a 1-day coach when he tried to make GoJo into an opening batsman. Never been fond of the lower-order-batsman-as-pinch-hitter idea.

I think there is a place for the pinch-hitter in a settled one-day side that has just lost a batsmen possibly at number 3 or even opening. If there are no ideal replacements to fill the gap, especially when on tour, then this idea could be implemented to good effect. However, it is not a long-term investment as consistency in performance is very low and it can end with batsmen going into a long form slump.

The only time it can work consistently is if you have a batsman of the calibre of Gilchrist who can probably get into the side just as a batsman.

I think this should be the final 14 assuming Flintoff won't be ready. The first 3 can take advantage of the first 15 overs. The next 3 to deal with spin and then the following 3 to do some big hitting.

1 Trescothick
2 Loye
3 Pietersen
4 Strauss
5 Collingwood
6 Dalrymple
7 Read
8 Broad
9 Plunkett
10 Harmison
11 Anderson

12 Blackwell
13 Joyce
14 Chapple

Really can't see the value of bringing Loye into the setup? Would prefer to get Strauss up the order and find a place for an anchor man like Bell or Cook...

I think the ODIs v Pakistan will be a good indicator of who gets into the 14. So I am guessing they will want to look at Broad, Gough, Loye, Joyce, Chapple and Onions. Who will be the 4 fast bowlers against Pakistan? Harmison, Gough, Chapple and Broad. Mahmood and Onions might get a game at the end if things aren't going well. Don't think Lewis will be in the squad and Plunkett and Anderson don't look like being ready.

The main value of bringing in a player like Loye, is that he is a very good one-day batsman, who can find gaps, play big shots and has a wealth of a) experience and b) good form to rely on.

Guys like strauss and bell seem to spend a lot of the time hitting half volleys straight to fielders by playing (lovely looking, admittedly) orthodox strokes. Improvistion and a keen one-day brain (like the great fairbrother) are essential these days, and will balance well against power players like KP and Fred. I've always advocated bringing alistair brown back in. Age is no concern with the world cup round the corner.

Strauss and Cook have never convinced me at one day level, I'm afraid, and seem to be there (much like GoJo) for the sake of continuity alone.
