Batsmen Ian Bell (Warwickshire), Alastair Cook (Essex), Ed Joyce (Middlesex), Mal Loye (Lancashire), Kevin Pietersen (Hampshire), Vikram Solanki (Worcestershire), Andrew Strauss (Middlesex, capt), Marcus Trescothick (Somerset)

Allrounders Ian Blackwell (Somerset), Ravi Bopara (Essex), Tim Bresnan (Yorkshire), Andrew Flintoff (Lancashire), Glen Chapple (Lancashire), Rikki Clarke (Surrey), Paul Collingwood (Durham), James Dalrymple (Middlesex), Alex Loudon (Warwickshire), Michael Yardy (Sussex)

Wicketkeepers Geraint Jones (Kent), Chris Read (Notts)

Bowlers James Anderson (Lancashire), Stuart Broad (Leicestershire), Ashley Giles (Warwickshire), Darren Gough (Essex), Stephen Harmison (Durham), Matthew Hoggard (Yorkshire), Jon Lewis (Gloucestershire), Sajid Mahmood (Lancashire), Graham Onions (Durham), Liam Plunkett (Durham).

Seems stupid being told to pick a squad of 30. Disappointed to see a few names in there though, Onions, Yardy, Solanki and Bresnan.

So why can't Monty play?? Thats almost crazy... He canbe a good defensive bowler and also if they do attack him, he will take wickets.. I would have included him in a sqaud of 30...

Anyway, I hope Blackwell gets in and does some things with the bat ontop of being economical!

I suppose Fletcher wants a no.11 who can make a quickfire 10 off three balls in unlikely event that he's ever called on to bat....

Poor K. Ali as well, I remember when he bowled that last over when they didnt need much off it and he got 2 or 3 wickets and we won... I would certainly have him in place of Gough

I can smell something in the air, eminating from ECB high command. What is it ? Desperation ! After bringing in gough (aged 62 and hasnt done much for essex this season - mellons can confirm or deny) I'm fully expecting his opening bowling partner to Gus Fraser and freddies spot going to botham.

If it was me I'd play the test 11 and give them a run out, maybe give KP, Bell and colly some overs. We cant get a bigger kicking than we alreay get.

I can understand it. We bowled very poorly at the beginning and end of innings against Sri Lanka. Gough has bowled fairly well this summer for Essex. Personally I would have found space for another old head too!

I'll go on your say so on goughs form - I've missed the whole county thing bar the first month and he was getting carted on the scorecards I saw, but if form has improved fair enough. I suppose take him in a coaching/advisory capacity but I'm still not convinced that he's the best for the job.

Unfortunately that's true, too. However, I believe that was still far better than anything we saw during the Sri Lanka series
