Twenty20 & ODI Squad

Just got it from Sky Sports:

Andrew Strauss (c) *
Marcus Tresothick *
Alastair Cook
Kevin Pietersen *
Ian Bell
Paul Collingwood *
Ed Joyce *
Rikki Clarke
Jamie Dalrymple *
Michael Yardy
Chris Read (wk) *
Sajid Mahmood *
Jon Lewis
Darren Gough *
Steve Harmison *
Stuart Broad *

* This is who I reckon will be the first choice XI, maybe the place of Ed Joyce could be contested a little but I would play that side.

Plunkett still injured then, no surprise to see Solanki and Ali dropped, I thought Shah may have made a claim with last week's ton but he hasn't. My team from that (for both) is the same as yours, but to put it into the batting order I think they will and should be arranged into:

Marcus Trescothick
Andrew Strauss*
Ed Joyce
Kevin Pietersen
Paul Collingwood
Jamie Dalrymple
Chris Read+
Darren Gough
Sajid Mahmood
Steve Harmison
Stuart Broad

[Pessimism]We'll still get clobbered though, no matter who they put out.[/Pessimism]

I fear you're right. Looking forward to seeing Broad though. You have him at 11 but I have heard he can bat. Saw him bowl at 20/20 finals but not seen him bat. Can anyone confirm if he can handle the willow?

Maybe he'll get 3 tons in the winter like his old man

Are these the 16 best ODI players in England. I think not.

I know little about "Broad" is he fast, and if so how fast is he in comparason with sat Harmison or Hoggard or Mahmood?.Like I say I have not seen him bowl.

Broad is sort of between Mahmood and Hoggy pace if I remember rightly, and a very good one day bowler too.

Broad's economy of 4.5 (or there abouts) in Twenty20 speaks wonders compared to most bowlers who were going at more than six per over!

His pace is 82-85mph on a normal day and keeps a very good seam position. (From what I've seen of him anyway)

Yes, he certainly looks like he knows what he's doing which is more than you can say for Mahmood and Plunkett most of the time. He's 6'7 and about 85 mph, set to grow some too so his pace might increase. In the 2020 he looked to have excellent control and an exemplary action for a guy just turned 20 and gave Irani a right going over. Never seen him bat, but CMJ says this about his batting:

Quote:
...one only has to see him bat for ten minutes to know that he will score more runs than Plunkett or Mahmood.
And this about his bowling:

Quote:
Already he looks the potential superior of Mahmood, Liam Plunkett and Lewis, not to mention any other fast bowler in the country. No one wishes to make a hostage to fortune but if Broad is as well handled by England as he has already been by Oakham Scool and Leicestershire, he is going to take more wickets in international cricket even than Stephen Harmison or Andrew Flintoff.

At 20 he has unusual pace from a good, high action. The potential for speeds in the early eighties to become higher still is clearly there, no matter how unusual it is for a bowler of his height — 6ft 6in and growing — to bowl genuinely fast for long periods.

As with Harmison at his best, however, bounce is already as much his weapon as speed through the air.

Have to say, I'm surprised to see Yardy included for his bowling but such is the way with Duncan. I thought he bowled left arm licorice all sorts and so was taken aback to hear his bowling described as "left arm spin". I can't believe Shah isn't included in the one day squad - Fletcher really mustn't rate him.

I thought Mal Loye would have been in with a shot, being named in the Champions Trophy provisional squad. Broad - I'm sure he can bat, but these continued comments about Plunkett are terribly disingenuous (not singling you out Dave) - he can bat but is young and didn't ask to be put in at number 8 against Kumble and co!

Thank's adam, I had never seen him play.

If we must play this truncated form of the game, this is the team I would choose from the squad that Vrock has provided us with.

As small an input from the Test side as possible.
