Onions has shown very good form this season so I think this is a fine move from the selectors.

I think the selectors are allowing Tremlett the 'Anderson' deal; give him a full season (apart from missing the start) of cricket and not miss two four days games so he can play three one day games.

Onions would have been a better choice for Tests than ODI's, he is genuinely hostile, good pace, bounce and will take wickets. He will probably go for runs as well, but he has better control than Harmison or Mahmood.

Interesting development in terms of WAT 'A' team selection: not sure where the thread has gone but as I recall... many were completely discounting Onions just the other week!

Edit: the thread isn't in the 'A' team forum...it's here.

'Younis Wary of England Attack - they are missing Flintoff, Giles, Vaughan and Jones'.

Of these 4 the only one we are missing is Flintoff who makes a huge difference to the side.

Jones - only played 8 odis 7 wickets at 39.28. (3 Zim 1 Bang 3 Aus)
Giles - 37.61 > Blackwell 32.33> Dalrymple 51.20 I would have to say we would be missing Blackwell more than Giles
Vaughan - 28.36

He should have said they are missing Flintoff, Blackwell, Anderson and Harmison.

Tremlett should be there ahead of Onions no doubt about it. Just saw him bowl today against Gloucestshire he knocked Craig Spearman over with a beauty and almost had Hamish Marshall caught in the slips but it ran away for four. Tremlett would add a different dimension to the England team with his pace and the bounce he gets because he is tall. He should definetly be in the England squad no doubt but maybe they are being a bit cautious with him because he has just come back from injury.

i'd hope the reason they leave tremlett out is to give him a proper chance to recover, but the cynic in me says it's more that as usual a hampshire player isn't picked despite being better than the person picked in their place. Tremlett is a better bowler than Lewis and Mahmood, Mascheranas is a better allrounder than Clarke. I understand that neither of them would be the first choices if everyone was fit, but they should be close to the top 2 or 3 replacements, whereas they're not even mentioned when we're down to our 10th choice.

Trouble is the rosebowl pitch has been handed a reputation for what it was like when it was first laid, pitches change but fans views and memories don't it seems (headingly a seamers paradise eh?), so anything Tremlett does is simply put down to where he plays, never seemed to disadvantage yorkshire players when headingley was the easiest place to bowl in the world....

Oh well, minor county bitterness obviously

What, do Hampshire actually have some England-qualified players then?

we have six non-england qualified players in the squad, same as yorkshire, only our players actually have to do something amazing to earn a place in the england side whereas yours just turn up (*cough* Bresnan, McGrath, Dawson)

Well Bresnan is a talented youngster who like Tremlett last season was chosen to see how good they were.Dawson had 3 or 4 good games and ended up in the England squad, not his fault that we had no spin options back then but everybody now knows he was selected far too soon and McGrath had been on a few England A tours and was chosen because he could bowl as well.He is still one of the best batting all rounders in the country which his record this season shows.

Tremlett is too injury prone and will probably never fulfill his massive potential.I think that under Fletcher the county bias has all but gone as he has been prepared to pick players from unfashionable counties like Somerset,Northants and Durham so your argument there is just sour grapes.
